Earth's "Krypton" Atmosphere: What You're Breathing May Not Have Originated Here

Superman_Returns_1 Some scientists say that there really is something Kryptonian among us, brought to Earth by impacting objects from outer space – only it's the noble gas, not a noble hero, because there's nothing more Kryptonian than Krypton itself.  A new study shows that Earth's atmosphere may have been swept up from interplanetary gas clouds instead of coming from within the planet.

Of course such statements are only a matter of timing – everything originally came from gas clouds, as interstellar material was pulled together to form first the sun and then an arrangement of orbiting planets.  Many say that the atmosphere vented from within the Earth itself, slowly seeping out over time or violently released by bombardment from space.  Dr Greg Holland and colleagues of the University of Manchester instead say that the air we breathe comes from clouds dragged down from the heavens after our Earth had formed.

Antimatter Lightning Discovered (On Earth!)

33627759.CPCVERTICALLIGHTNING2 Antimatter Lightning!  We're going to do our best, but nothing we could possibly write will be as awesome as the fact that's real and on Earth.  In fact, nothing you ever read for the rest of your life will be as awesome as that, and it's only the way human memory degrades with time that'll let you ever get excited about anything ever again.

Like all the most discoveries, it was unexpected. The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope was launched to examine the universe for the stupendously powerful processes that produce gamma ray bursts, from black hole jets to the effects of dark matter itself, only to find blasts coming from behind it. From Earth.

SciFi Greats Ask: Do We Live in a Biological Universe?

Shutterstock_1184448_3 Is science fiction a prelude to science fact? Can you "sense" the future in the present?

No one has answered that question better than the single greatest mind in the history of science. To quote Einstein: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

The Mystery of Magnetic Fields (VIDEO)

1677 The lives of invisible magnetic fields are revealed as chaotic ever-changing geometries . All action takes place around NASA's Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, to recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries . Actual VLF audio recordings control the evolution of the fields, revealing recurrent ‘whistlers' produced by fleeting electrons.

The creators, Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt of Semiconductor, ask: are we observing a series of scientific experiments, the universe in flux, or a documentary of a fictional world?.

International Artificial-Intelligence Team Builds Human Brain on a Silicon Chip

Artificial-brain_48 Artificial intelligence investigators have built a fully silicon scale simulation of the human brain.  The artificial neurons operate faster than the organic model, are built to learn and adapt, and even have a cool movie-style acronym, FACETS.  One thing seems clear:  AI researchers watch Terminator daily.

Richard Dawkins & the Big Questions

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins tours the Natural History Museum at Oxford University and asks and answers some of the big questions about our existence on Planet Earth. A key focus is the impact of Darwin and "The Origin of the Species" on modern thought. A tour de force-don't miss this!

Neuro-Negation to Kick Smoking Habit

quit-smoking.jpgTechnology has been blamed for the loss of self-control in the new generation. Why stand up when there are a thousand channels? Why do chores when there are machines to do them for us? Why be bored in the cinema when you can just phone a friend (you ignorant git)? And now, why struggle yourself when science can do it for you? Recent advances in neuroscience could turn discipline into an injection - at least for smokers.

Actual Factual Jet Pack: VIDEO

Jetpit73jetpack At last the future is here. After decades wasted on such frivolous concerns as space travel and attempting to cure cancer, man has realized what is truly important and bent his skills to achieving the ultimate truth: a goddamn jetpack. (The ultimate truth is "Jetpacks are totally sweet" - video inside)
