NASA Astrobiology --"Early Earth is a Model for Emerging Life on Alien Planets"

  Untitled-37

Early Earth's regulatory carbon/seafloor weathering process would occur on any rocky planet with water. “There’s nothing special about these processes,” says Joshua Krissansen-Totton from the University of Washington's astrobiology program and Virtual Planetary Laboratory. "We know pre-solar nebulae contained the ingredients for life; we also know countless exoplanets with those ingredients exist in habitable zones. The study widens the window of time on which life could have emerged on those planets."

"Huge Increase in Size of Cerebral Cortex" --Scientists Pinpoint Unique Evolution of the Human Brain

Over the last million years of evolution, our brain underwent a considerable increase in size and complexity, resulting in the exceptional cognitive abilities of the human species. This brain enlargement is largely due to an increase in the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex, the outer part of the brain. Since we share about 99% of our genome with that of our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, it has remained a daunting task for scientists to identify which human-specific gene changes may underlie the unique aspects of human brain evolution.

"Alien Moons May Be Best Bet for Life" --100 Giant Exoplanets With Moons Identified as Habitable

"There are currently 175 known moons orbiting the eight planets in our solar system. While most of these moons orbit Saturn and Jupiter, which are outside the Sun's habitable zone, that may not be the case in other solar systems," said Stephen Kane, an associate professor of planetary astrophysics and a member of the University of California Riverside's Alternative Earths Astrobiology Center. "Including rocky exomoons in our search for life in space will greatly expand the places we can look."

"Our Plugged-In Cosmos" --Dark Matter May Be Electrically Charged

Reviews_film_0

"We are constraining the possibility that dark matter particles carry a tiny electrical charge – equal to one millionth that of an electron – through measurable signals from the cosmic dawn," says Avi Loeb of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). "Such tiny charges are impossible to observe even with the largest particle accelerators."

The historical die-offs are similar to “what we’re seeing right now on the Great Barrier Reef,” says Mark Eakin, a coral reef ecologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in College Park, Maryland.

Using a pioneering method, researchers from the Astronomy and Astrophysics Group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics (IAC) have found a neutron star of about 2.3 solar masses—one of the most massive ever detected. The study opens a new path of knowledge in many fields of astrophysics and nuclear physics.

If Advanced Alien Species have Language: "Would It be Similar to Humans? That's the Big Question"

Arrival (2)

World-renowned linguist Noam "Chomsky has often said that if a Martian visited Earth, it would think we all speak dialects of the same language, because all terrestrial languages share a common underlying structure," Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) head Doug Vakoch. "But if aliens have language, would it be similar to ours? That's the big question."

Violent Supermassive Black-Hole Eruptions Occur About Every 10,000 Years in Most Galaxies

A star that wanders too close to the supermassive black hole in the center of its galaxy will be torn apart by the black hole's gravity in a violent cataclysm called a tidal disruption event (TDE), producing a bright flare of radiation. A new study led by theoretical astrophysicists at the University of Copenhagen's Niels Bohr Institute and UC Santa Cruz provides a unified model that explains recent observations of these extreme events.

"Humans are the First to Arrive at the Interstellar Stage" --Physicist Answers the Fermi Paradox

"One rogue AI can potentially populate the entire supercluster with copies of itself, turning every solar system into a supercomputer, and there is no use asking why it would do that," observes theoretical physicist Alexander Berezin from the National Research University of Electronic Technology (MIET) in Russia.

Today's "Planet Earth Report" --'Heaven Can Wait' -A Website by a Team of Oceanographers and Archaeologists Solves a World War II Mystery, and Emotions Flood In

After the B-24 bomber carrying Second Lt. Thomas V. Kelly Jr. was shot down off the coast of what is now Papua New Guinea in 1944, his parents had a gray tombstone etched with a drawing of the plane and the words “In Loving Memory.” The 21-year-old bombardier’s remains were never recovered, and for years, his relatives rarely discussed the pain they felt over his death.
