"This is where we get to the great irony of the story – because in the end it wasn’t the size of the asteroid, the scale of blast, or even its global reach that made dinosaurs extinct – it was where the impact happened," said Ben Garrod, who presents the BBC documentary The Day The Dinosaurs Died (watch video below).

"The problem with Tabby's Star," says Daryll LaCourse, a Kepler Mission data miner and co-author of the discovery paper, "is that every explanation that doesn't involve aliens has some sort of problem, some unresolved big issue with that particular theory."

Today's Top Science Headline --Does Dark Matter Harbor Life? "An Invisible Civilization Could be Living Right Under Your nose"

Dark-Matter-Filaments

Familiar visible matter, writes Harvard theoretical physicist Lisa Randall, can be thought of as the privileged percent—actually more like 15 percent—of matter. In business and politics, the interacting 1 percent dominates decision making and policy, while the remaining 99 percent of the population provides less widely acknowledged infrastructure and support—maintaining buildings, keeping cities operational, and getting food to people’s tables. Similarly, ordinary matter dominates almost everything we notice, whereas dark matter, in its abundance and ubiquity, helped create clusters and galaxies and facilitated star formation, but has only limited influence on our immediate surroundings today.

"We're Looking at Things All Wrong," --Unsolved 'Black-Box' Mystery of the Dark Side of Our Universe (A 2017 'Galaxy' Most Viewed)

"My bet is that we're looking at things all wrong," says cosmologist Scott Dodelson, one of the lead scientists behind the new Dark Energy Survey results and chair of the Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. "Someone who's eight years old today is going to come around and figure out how to make sense of all the data without evoking mysterious new substances."

"Dark Matter is a Mythical Beast" --A New Theory of Gravity and the Dark Side of the Cosmos (A 'Galaxy' 2017 Most Viewed)

The classical theory of gravity is in dire need of new approaches, since it doesn't combine well with quantum physics. Both theories, crown jewels of 20th century physics, cannot be true at the same time. A Dutch theoretical physicist and string theorist, Erik Verlinde, proposes a starkly different theory --the theory of emergent gravity. "We might be standing on the brink of a new scientific revolution," he says,"that will radically change our views on the very nature of space, time and gravity."

Today's Top Space Headline: "A Neutron Star Collision in Our Milky Way Neighborhood Could Wreak Catastrophe on Earth"

A long time ago in a galaxy far away two neutron stars collided and created a spectacular light show shown above known as a “kilonova,” a hot, dense expanding cloud of debris that shook the universe, emitting some 200 million suns’ worth of energy as perturbations in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves. For weeks much of the world’s astronomical community watched the kilonova as it slowly faded from view. Such collisions are thought to produce much of the universe's gold, platinum and other elements heavier than iron. But they can also have catastrophic consequences for any nearby habitable planets. (NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, CI Lab).

In October, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the scientists who discovered gravitational waves in 2015. It was an appropriate decision—not only because the merit of their work spanned light-years, but also because 2017, too, brought successive revelations in physics, from violent events millions of miles away to ancient, empty spaces illuminated by the tiniest of particles.
