"At the Edge of the Milky Way" --Vast Structure of Satellite Galaxies Coexist with Dark Matter

Milky-Way-Galaxy-Has-Four-Spiral-Arms-According-to-12-year-study

The vast polar structure--a plane of satellite galaxies at the poles of the Milky Way--is at the center of a tug-of-war between scientists who disagree about the existence of mysterious dark matter, the invisible substance that, according to some scientists, comprises 85 percent of the mass of the universe. Research conducted by scientists at Rochester Institute of Technology rules out a challenge to the accepted standard model of the universe and theory of how galaxies form by shedding new light on a problematic structure.

"The Cretaceous Serengetti" --An Astounding Twenty-One Species of Dinosaur Fossils Discovered Down Under (WATCH Today's "Galaxy" Stream)

More than 100 million years ago, on a muddy stretch of land that is now Australia, nearly two-dozen species of dinosaur once roamed. There were duck-billed ornithopods, which left long, three-toed tracks in their wake. Heavy armored dinosaurs pressed large, tulip-shaped prints into the soil. Predators scratched the ground with their talons. And the feet of gigantic, long-necked sauropods created bathtub-sized depressions in the dirt.

Solar Winds Morphed Mars from a Potential Water-Based Life Habitat into a Frigid Desert World

Wetmars_drymars

Solar wind and radiation are responsible for stripping the Martian atmosphere, transforming Mars from a planet that could have supported life billions of years ago into a frigid desert world, according to new results from NASA's MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission) spacecraft led by the University of Colorado Boulder.

"Dark Energy Thought to Make Up 68% of the Universe, May Not Exist" --Royal Astronomical Society

Dark_matter_stride_by_tchaikovsky2

Enigmatic dark energy, thought to make up 68% of the universe, may not exist at all, according to a Hungarian-American team. The researchers believe that standard models of the universe fail to take account of its changing structure, but that once this is done the need for dark energy disappears. The team publish their results in a paper in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

"Space Talk" --NASA is Working to Forever Change the Way Astronauts Communicate Using Advanced Laser Communications

NASA-exoplanets-514399

NASA is working to forever change the way astronauts communicate to and from space using an advanced laser communications system called LEMNOS, which will enable exponentially faster connections than ever before.
Imagine being able to watch 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) video as humans take their first steps on another planet. Or imagine astronauts picking up a cell phone and video-conferencing their family and friends from 34 million miles away, just the same as they might on Earth.

Intriguing Mystery of Saturn's Ocean Moon --"Were Enceladus's Towering Geysers at South Pole Caused by a Massive Ancient Impact" (WATCH VIDEO)

Enceladus-16

Enceladus’ south pole marks one of the solar system’s most captivating mysteries. Saturn’s icy moon spews plumes of liquid from an interior ocean, plus an enormous amount of heat but only from its south pole. The south pole’s heat emission is equivalent to the power of 4000 wind turbines running at full capacity. A new model suggests that’s because it suffered a hit-and-run long ago.

Mystery of Arctic's 'Green Ice' Solved --"Sea Ice Thickness in the Past 30 Years has Dramatically Changed the Ecology"

Arctic (1)

"The meter decline in sea ice thickness in the Arctic in the past 30 years has dramatically changed the ecology in that area," said Harvard's Chris Horvat. "All of a sudden, our entire idea about how this ecosystem works is different. The foundation of the Arctic food web is now growing at a different time and in places that are less accessible to animals that need oxygen."

Jupiter's Gravity Prevented Impact With a Captive Asteroid For the Past One-Million Years

3-13

For at least a million years, an asteroid orbiting the "wrong" way around the sun has been playing a cosmic game of chicken with giant Jupiter and with about 6,000 other asteroids sharing the giant planet's space, says a report published in the latest issue of Nature. The asteroid, nicknamed Bee-Zed, is the only one in this solar system that's known both to have an opposite, retrograde orbit around the sun while at the same time sharing a planet's orbital space, says researcher and co-author Paul Wiegert of Western Ontario University Physics and Astronomy.

"We Need to Go Beyond the Standard Model of Physics" --Peter Higgs, Discoverer of the Higgs Boson

Newphysics

"There are plenty of indications of the need to go beyond the standard model, but not necessarily through the sort of thing they do at CERN" Peter Higgs told New Scientist. "The discoveries in neutrino physics about neutrino oscillations don’t fit well at all. And people are beginning to learn more about ancient galaxies and so on, which throws some light on the question of whether dark matter exists or whether you’ve got to modify gravity. I think we have to watch the astrophysical evidence coming in."

The Chicxulub "Dinosaur-Killer" Asteroid Impact --"Life Rebounded Quickly Creating New Niches" (VIDEO)

“Life returned to the crater very quickly,” Christopher Lowery, a researcher at the University of Texas-Austin, said during a news conference at the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Conference (LPSC) here in Houston on Tuesday, March 21. Microfossils found in the core sample show that life at the crater reappeared after about 30,000 years, roughly when it reappeared in other locations, according to Lowery. “You see [that resurgence] across the globe,” Lowery added.
