Great Attractor Mystery Solved! --"Hundreds of Galaxies Discovered Hidden Behind the Milky Way"

Hundreds of hidden nearby galaxies have been studied for the first time, shedding light on a mysterious gravitational anomaly dubbed the Great Attractor, which appears to be drawing the Milky Way and hundreds of thousands of other galaxies towards it with a gravitational force equivalent to a million billion Suns. Despite being just 250 million light years from Earth--very close in astronomical terms--the new galaxies had been hidden from view until now by our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Using CSIRO's Parkes radio telescope equipped with an innovative receiver, an international team of scientists were able to see through the stars and dust of the Milky Way, into a previously unexplored region of space.

Lead author Lister Staveley-Smith, from The University of Western Australia node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), said the team found 883 galaxies, a third of which had never been seen before.

"The Milky Way is very beautiful of course and it's very interesting to study our own galaxy but it completely blocks out the view of the more distant galaxies behind it," he said.

Staveley-Smith said scientists have been trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious Great Attractor since major deviations from universal expansion were first discovered in the 1970s and 1980s. "We don't actually understand what's causing this gravitational acceleration on the Milky Way or where it's coming from," he said.

The Milky Way resides in the outskirts of the  Laniakea Supercluster, 500 million light-years in diameter and contains the mass of one hundred million billion Suns spread across 100,000 galaxies.. Within the  boundaries of the Laniakea Supercluster, galaxy motions are directed inward, in the same way that water streams  follow descending paths toward a valley. The Great Attractor region is a large flat bottom gravitational valley with a sphere of attraction that extends across the Laniakea Supercluster.

"We know that in this region there are a few very large collections of galaxies we call clusters or superclusters, and our whole Milky Way is moving towards them at more than two million kilometerss per hour."

The research identified several new structures that could help to explain the movement of the Milky Way, including three galaxy concentrations (named NW1, NW2 and NW3) and two new clusters (named CW1 and CW2).

University of Cape Town astronomer Renée Kraan-Korteweg said astronomers have been trying to map the galaxy distribution hidden behind the Milky Way for decades. "We've used a range of techniques but only radio observations have really succeeded in allowing us to see through the thickest foreground layer of dust and stars," she said. "An average galaxy contains 100 billion stars, so finding hundreds of new galaxies hidden behind the Milky Way points to a lot of mass we didn't know about until now."

Dr. Bärbel Koribalski from CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science said innovative technologies on the Parkes Radio telescope had made it possible to survey large areas of the sky very quickly. "With the 21-cm multibeam receiver on Parkes we're able to map the sky 13 times faster than we could before and make new discoveries at a much greater rate," she said.

The study involved researchers from Australia, South Africa, the US and the Netherlands, and was published today in the Astronomical Journal.

this again, makes me wonder about Dark Matter. Supposedly, we need dark matter, to account for the missing matter in the universe. But two things I have read confuses me. First, our recent understanding that almost all starts are now thought to have planets. Big chunk of matter not accounted for there wouldn't you say? Now here is 883 galaxies [average 100 billion stars each?], that we did not know about. Does the percentage of dark matter get adjusted with these? If we do not use dark matter in calcs, how much more matter does there need to[or discovered in future once our technology catches up] to negate this supposition?

Just a beginner trying

This Great Attractor findings MUST be the death of the Big Bang theory and it´s fluent expansion in the Universe.

It is more than likely that there are an infinite number of galaxies in ANY direction. With nothing more than the principle of Occam's Razor to support my claim, it is my opinion that the universe is infinite. And that given our present primitive state we have a limited ability to differentiate between what is real and what is perceived.

When scientists currently refer to the “big bang”, and the beginning of the existence of “everything” they should explain that they are talking about just the limited universe that we see around us; our little bubble. It is most likely that the TOTAL universe has always existed and will continue to exist for an infinity of time. And that there are an unending number of “universes”, all of which have had, and continue to have their “big bang” moment too.

Our solar system, our Milky Way, our galaxy, our “universe” all exist in an infinite soup of “universes”, just a mote in time without end.

So, let’s stop talking about “the universe” and ubstitute “our local universe".

How about it?

...our Universe is potentially a mere grape within a bunch of grapes hanging from a grapevine in a Vineyard. Perhaps each Universe breathes continuously, or perhaps it eventually dehydrates of hydrogen, helium and oxygen etc.

As it turns out, we are part of a massive supercluster of galaxies called Lanikea. Within each Galaxy are millions, billions or perhaps even trillion of stars. Lanikea is just one of many superclusters in our universe.

"World without End." Is that so hard to the face of even the absolute truth (an impossibility), humanity still manages to readily defocus from the ephemeral majesty to get back to killing and stealing from each other. Time for a serious adjustment of our species habits.

These are some of the most ignorant comments I have ever read. Big Bang theory has been exhaustively tested through physics and passed each time and all observations support the theory. It isn't an established theory if the math fails or observations contradict it. Smarter people than you all have attempted to discredit the Big Bang theory and have failed. The Great Attractor doesn't account for the expansion of the universe, just merely the apparent vector of galaxies in our local group. Also, mystery not solved as scientists said themselves they still don't know whats causing it. "We don't actually understand what's causing this gravitational acceleration on the Milky Way or where it's coming from," -Stavely-Smith

The universe/cosmos is not violent, all objects small and large are electronicly tied into a star universe with its bonified orbit all to itself.Objects do hit others , but its not by accident, for example take Shumaker Levi9 hitting Jupiter, this happened because of Jupiter electronic connections with that comet. Before this happens Jupiter sends out electronic felers wich monitors and connects to other objects ,it them analise its connection for likes or dislikes. In the case of Shumaker Levu9 it was a failed analisis, and was rejected from entering the main stream lime light of the Sun. Those that are not in the sunlight main stream hungers for that warm cuddly orbit. This is why Shuemaker Levi9 ended up hitting Jupiter in hostility,if it was accepted by Jupiter ,it would have orbitd around as Haley comet is doing at present ,and finally setteled in as a moon of Jupiter,Shumaker Levi9 followed that connection any way

Ivar Nielson-why is this news the death of the Big Bang theory? Again, u electric universe nutters need to actually join in, on the intelligent discussion, if u ever want to be taken seriously.. Up until now, and ur comment being conclusive proof of this by the way, u and ur fellow EU cronies are no better than trump and his supporters.. Ya'll troll real science articles, with ur conspiracy theories, just a lot of hot air and a waste of comment section space.. If u really believe in the EU, why don't u provide a coherent argument next time, instead do trolling like a "trumpeter" as Palin lovingly calls em.. If u can't formulate a legitimate idea, leave real science out of ur nutter conspiracy movement, and stay the hell outta here!!! You make us all dumber with ur idiocy!!

Wow a virtual freight train of galaxies! Just imagine the gathering momentum and inertia. If that applies?

Big Bang in progress ?

Big bang = God, because any begining that happens 14 bllion y.a is making us very very very very special in infinite amount in time. Its just a misinterpretation. In fact any begining ever makes us so special Its nearly imposible for us to exist. It was going of since infinity towards infinity. There is no begining and no end. Face it. Infinity is natural way of everything. Its only our minds that are used to passing. Come on, 14 billion years since begining - It makes no sense at all. Excuse my english.

The Universe is endless in size and deepness. The matter and space are self-producing constantly active building bricks in Universe. There are never exist Big Bangs, Dark Matter or Dark Energy since all these artificially elaborated entities are the ordinary “baryonic” matter proliferating from the microscopic stage to the level where we can observe it in our dimension. World is constantly growing, pushing and pooling existing cosmic clusters that also constantly growing to become visible in the following dimension that is too large to us to see. We are existing on one of the stages of the pyramid of boundless cosmic life. The “Flowers of Life” inserted in each other are the geometric presentation of this process.

The effect of The Great Attractor is not due so much to gravitational attraction as it is to a flow initiated by three body dynamics.
Two super clusters of galaxies ganged-up on a smaller third and ejected it from the community. The MW happens to be a part of that huge conglomeration.

Has any discrete area been found that is strongly pushing galaxies around it?
