"Our Holographic Universe" --Will It Prove to Be the Greatest Theory of the 21st Century?

  Cover-pozzi

Whether we actually live in a hologram is being hotly debated, but it is now becoming clear that looking at phenomena through a holographic lens could be key to solving some of the most perplexing problems in physics.

Last month, Japanese physicists presented in Nature News as "the clearest evidence yet that our Universe could be just one big projection." The universe existing as a ‘hologram’ is the theory that the three dimensions we perceive are actually just “painted” onto the cosmological horizon - the boundary of the known universe.

In two papers on arXiv, that represent the the culmination of many years’ work focused on hypothetical calculations of the energies of black holes in different universes, Yoshifumi Hyakutake and colleagues from Ibaraki University in Japan offer evidence that supports a theory that suggests that a universe as we conceive of it could actually be a hologram of another two-dimensional space --a holographic projection of another, flat version of you living on a two-dimensional "surface" at the edge of this universe. This radical model of the universe helps explain some inconsistencies between general relativity (Einstein’s theory) and quantum physics. At certain extremes (such as in the center of a black hole) Einstein's theory break down and the laws of quantum physics take over.

The standard method of reconciling these two models has come from the 1997 work of theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena, at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, who proposed a radical model of the Universe in which gravity arises from infinitesimally thin, vibrating strings which exist in nine dimensions of space plus one of time, and would be a hologram --a simpler, flatter cosmos where there is no gravity.

Maldacena's theory provided physicists with a mathematical Rosetta stone, a 'duality', that allowed them solve problems in one model that seemed unsolvable in the other, but has yet to receive a rigorous proof. A theory that Columbia University mathematican Peter Woit describes as "not even wrong."

In one paper2 described in Nature, Hyakutake computes the internal energy of a black hole, the position of its event horizon (the boundary between the black hole and the rest of the Universe), its entropy and other properties based on the predictions of string theory as well as the effects of so-called virtual particles that continuously pop into and out of existence. Paper 3, calculates the internal energy of the corresponding lower-dimensional cosmos with no gravity. The two computer calculations match.

Maldacena embraced the new research as “an interesting way to test many ideas in quantum gravity and string theory.” “The whole sequence of papers is very nice because it tests the dual [nature of the universes] in regimes where there are no analytic tests," he added.

Leonard Susskind, a theoretical physicist at Stanford University who was among the first theoreticians to explore the idea of holographic universes and was one of the founders of string theory, added that the work by the Japanese team “numerically confirmed, perhaps for the first time, something we were fairly sure had to be true, but was still a conjecture.”

Maldacena concluded that "the numerical proof that these two seemingly disparate worlds are actually identical gives hope that the gravitational properties of our Universe can one day be explained by a simpler cosmos purely in terms of quantum theory."

untestable, unproveable ... many theories get some of the maths to work out ... physics needs to return to hands-on, experimental science

we live in a three-dimensional universe and that is what matters and where our focus should lie

It is not a scientific theory, it is a mathematical fantasy.

If it is being "projected" to us, where are we that we are being "projected" to? (Serious question, not being a jackass. At least not on purpose)

"the culmination of many years’ work focused on hypothetical calculations of the energies of black holes in different universes"

Done quite some time before actually proving different universes even exist. How is this not fantasy?

you cannot move in the 3rd dimension of hologram. Meanwhile in everyday life we can freely move in any of 3 spatial dimensions. The above theory is an abstract mathematical mindgame.

Re ‘vk’, just preceding this comment: perhaps one might be able to move in the 3rd dimension of a hologram if one was part of a virtual world, as posited by this new ‘duality’ theory.

re: resonanz. You cannot move in projected dimension because it is imaginary, non-existant. This theory is an artificial mathematical construct. Probably Matrix is their favorite movie. We have full generation which has grown up watching that movie.

these theories are beginning to look more and more like some religions i know of. Like for example there is a higher(>4) dimension of me somewhere at the edge of space, and my body is just a 3D projection of the higher me :)

also worth reading, since this is a hot topic around here: http://www.universetoday.com/107172/why-our-universe-is-not-a-hologram/#more-107172

It's a projection of a computer generated virtual reality created by GOD! lol

Think about it. We already operate within a multi-dimensional universe. Conscious thought (imagination) creates a holographic world. If you're a researcher or engineer or architect you can translate those thoughts into a real world three dimensional construct. Mind holographs are always being made three dimensional. Think about it!

"Conscious thought (imagination) creates a holographic world."

Describe how please.

I have to reply to some (not only here) who are saying that it is like a religion.

Whilst I agree that there is no hard evidence, and things remain yet unproven (and probably will for a very, very, long time to come), it is not in any way like a religion.

The math bears out. Anyone can check it out and see for themselves. Unlike religion, you can check if things actually make sense on a mathematical level with real evidence as part of the input. Whether or not the conclusion is correct is up for debate (and testing), but it requires no "faith" on anyone's part.

Not only that: it has no rituals, no dogmas, no dictates on how one should conduct one's life, or any other trappings of religion. Conjecture and hypothesis do not a religion make. What makes a religion are all the things which derive from it without any evidence, and without the slightest logical input into the hypothesis from the beginning.

And while I think that these "discoveries" remain completely abstract to everyone including the mathematicians themselves, they may help steer research into fields which one day may yield hard answers.

The last thing I would say about it is that unlike a religion, it is falsifiable. It won't be for a long time, but nobody who is on board with this is saying that it cannot be any other way and that no evidence would convince them to the contrary.

So please, enough with the religion thing. String theory (or, rather, hypothesis) and holographic universe hypotheses are not religions. They are conjectures, backed up by science and mathematical derivations. They could be wrong on the derivations, they acknowledge that they could be wrong, and they are not telling us how to conduct our lives based upon their conclusions.

Complete idiotism. We, Earth, Sun, exist physically.

"The math bears out."

Meaningless if the underpinning philosophy is bogus.

Nathaniel Harari: You have given a sensible, well-thought-out reply to the charge of 'religion'. I would say string theory and holograph theory are more like theological philosophy in that these theories might 'explain' something at the mathematical level, but they are utterly disconnected with any reality we can perceive and test. For thousands of years theories purporting to explain something about ourselves and our world were put forth by theologians. These theories involved unseen, unprovable things: gods, angels, crystal spheres, devils, imps, incubi, succubi, spirits, ghosts, etc, etc, etc. They were always put forth as 'explanations' or 'proofs'. In fact, these theories were a lot of nonsense, but that nonsense was debated in solemn learned circles for centuries. Sometimes I think so it is with string theory and hologram theory: much ado about nothing.

When will you guys stop telling things like this would be bullsh*t?

string theory is a framework to mathematically explain what we see and it works pretty well and is for a good reason the best theory we have to explain for example quantum gravity.

again, it is a framework not per-se a classic theory but it works and outperforms all other theories in that matter.

also, string theory doesn't necessarily require more than 3 dimensions but to explain certain things, you must add dimension. So to say addons for the framework to explain things.

so string theory does very well explain classic physical systems and quantum physics. Not more not less.

and as for the crap like "can't be tested", I tell you if people like you would lead all that science you would still sit in caves, thinking the earth is flat because you don't have the tools to measure sh*t.

btw. Higgs field 40 years, till the last minute hobby physicists and notorious no-can-doers predicted its untestibility -- well, the Higgs field is fact now -- booo

About multiverse and holograms:

there is strong observed evidence about us being projections. That is no Sci fi but can be pretty well possible.

black holes have such an horizon that requires holographic versions not to break the conservation of information principle.

since the expansion of space is observed and proved to expand exponentially over time, expanding faster than light, there must be parts of the universe that already expand faster than the speed of light. And that makes us (visible universe) sitting right at the edges of an event horizon and you can actually use the same proven maths as for black holes.

so do a bit of thinking and you'll see that this is not just a mathematical fantasy but already hard evidence that urgently requires further investigation.

there is also a lot to discover in the background radiation as this is magnified quantum mechanics in action that could provide keys in questions like this. Just let the guys do their job instead of throwing in sorts of religious trash low-performer-physics.

Mark, your ad hominem attacks do not further your argument. Some theories and conjectures can be tested, to be proved right or wrong. The Higgs was such a conjecture, and now it's proven. The fact is that string theory (as interesting as it is), holographic theory (which might well be useful in some ways), and multiverse theories (a fascinating area of conjecture) are all untestable. Period. They CANNOT be falsified in ANY experiment. So they are not science, they are philosophy. Notice that I am not calling you 'stupid', nor am I throwing 'trash' comments at you. I can respect your intelligence, and consider your comments, but still disagree with you ...politely.

Next there will be a theory purporting that we are 'puppets' attached to 'strings'

It is known that elastic optical scattering is a deterministic and time reversible process.

One thing is clear, some of the commenters here do not appreciate the implications of quantum mechanics with respect to consciousness. Another thing is clear, calling something "religious" is just name-calling and reveals no understanding of the enlightenment traditions, especially Vedantic Hinduism and Buddhism. Finally, saying multiple universes or string theories are utestable may be meaningless. Of course they are untestable. That does not invalidate the reasoning behind them. Call them "philosophy" if you will, but philosophy underlies all our thinking. The ruling reductionist materialism is a philosophical assumption that is, yes, untestable. Read Bernard d'Espagnat to acquaint yourself with a different philosophical assumption.

This is receiving quite a bit of hype, which explains all the aggravated remarks.. but I wouldn't disregard and condemn these people's hard work. Chill, people. The titles of the articles are throwing it way out proportion. Instead of looking at it as a failure and complete bs, look at it as an oppurtunity to learn more about our existence.

I suspect this is true the projections are not projections of photons or visible light they are projections threw waves and quantum entanglement in atoms it can happen and be true we would never know because we only can sense light touch smell and taste none of those relate to anything outside of this planet most of the light in space is invisible or in radiation our senses are what miss lead us into thinking this is real and has always existed to understand how space formed you would have to look at things we cannot see such as black holes and what they found out is that a black hole is a 2D surface in space so 2D worlds already exist and can easily be linked to a 3D copy
