Hubble Captures Gargantuan 'Cosmic Fossil'




The Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of a galaxy located approximately 320 million light-years away in the constellation of Eridanus, the River, which is, most likely, a cosmic fossil – the aftermath of an enormous multi-galactic pile-up, where the carnage of collision after collision has built up a brilliant giant elliptical galaxy far outshining typical galaxies.

Scientists have found that NGC 1132 resides in an enormous halo of dark matter, comparable to the amount of dark matter usually found in an entire group of tens or hundreds of galaxies.

Galaxy NGC 1132, seen in this latest image from Hubble, belongs to a category of galaxies called giant ellipticals. NGC 1132, together with the small dwarf galaxies surrounding it, are dubbed a “fossil group” as they are most likely the remains of a group of galaxies that merged together in the recent past.

The origin of fossil group systems remains a puzzle. The most likely explanation is that they are the end-products of a cosmic feeding frenzy in which a large cannibal galaxy devours all of its neighbors. A less likely explanation is that they may be very rare objects that formed in a region or period of time where the growth of moderate-sized galaxies was somehow suppressed, and only one large galaxy formed.

There is strong evidence that the Milky Way is one such cannibal that has snacked on numerous smaller galaxies during its lifetime, inheriting their stars in the process. Scientists are keenly studying the environment surrounding galaxies such as NGC 1132 using space telescopes like Hubble, and they try to trace the history of the formation these galaxies by analysing their properties.

In this Hubble image, NGC 1132 is seen surrounded by thousands of ancient globular clusters, swarming around the galaxy like bees around a hive. These globular clusters are likely to be the survivors of the disruption of their cannibalized parent galaxies that have been eaten by NGC 1132 and may reveal its merger history. In the background, there is a stunning tapestry of numerous galaxies that are much further away.

Elliptical galaxies are smooth and featureless. They contain hundreds of millions to trillions of stars, and their shapes range from nearly spherical to very elongated in shape. Their overall yellowish color is a telltale sign of their great age. Because elliptical galaxies do not contain much cool gas they can no longer make new stars.

There MUST be some kind of intelligent life in that huge galaxy. The problem is that if they tried to communicate with us, their signal would take 350 million years to reach us.

Luckily that event took place so long ago it must be cleared by now, no more messy cloud pile up and no more dust.

@ Peter Smitt. We cannot assume that any intelligent civilization formed even 1000 years before us would be using communications bound by the speed of light. They would likely be using quantum forms of communication. Bypassing the cosmic speed limit altogether. They would likely also be doing that for exploration, current propulsion technologies like the rockets we use, are probably the lowest and most inefficient form of travel available. Creating and manipulating you're own gravitational fields is where its at. Once you attain that ability the entire universe becomes you're playground.

Peter, you are spon on. Our physics is so primative compared to, say, physics of a society hundreds of thousands or even millions of years preceeding us...all that time to study and evolve mentally as well. The present circuitry of our human brain poses limits for our understanding and analysis so we can only percieve or understand X amount and that's severely limited on a possible scale of 1 to 10. I'd give us about a 2 or 3 actually compared to possible intelligences, if that much. A dog has no concept of a refrigerator or the concept of electricity to run it, or a power grid to provide the current or the hydroelectric plant to start the thing off, but does have concept when you pull out a morsel of cheeze from the fridge and give it to the dog. The dog will NEVER concept the refrigerator et al but will concept that the cheeze comes from it and whine at the door for more. It's like that with the universe. If the whole shebang was GIVEN to us, a few trainloads of text books of knowledge, yes we could read them just as the dog gobbles up the cheeze but as far as concepting and understanding them, that's where man's intelligence has its limit. We could copy-cat the books and hack through experiments but we would not concept them due to lack of intelligence TO concept them with. Mankind is so egotistic and refuses to accept that we are just jungle monkies amongst the stars full of super intelligence.

When a star destucts it destructs its planets and all civilizations on them. When a black hole sucks in entire solar systems, civilizations evaporate instantly. Can you imagine the intelligence gained over millions of years of evolution and study only to be lost in a second, in this universe? Collisions of comets and asteroids have obliterated how many advanced civs who have not colonized other planets yet (or have). The immensity of the universe could provide writers with an infinite amount of scifi material THAT IS ACTUALLY true, somewhere. A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...
