Jupiter Undergoing Cataclysmic Changes




"The changes we're seeing in Jupiter are global in scale," said Glenn Orton, a senior research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "We've seen some of these before, but never with modern instrumentation to clue us in on what's going on. Other changes haven't been seen in decades, and some regions have never been in the state they're appearing in now. At the same time, we've never seen so many things striking Jupiter. Right now, we're trying to figure out why this is all happening." 

Orton and colleagues have been taking images and maps of Jupiter at infrared wavelengths from 2009 to 2012 and comparing them with high-quality visible images from the increasingly active amateur astronomy community. Following the fading and return of a prominent brown-colored belt just south of the equator, called the South Equatorial Belt, from 2009 to 2011, the team studied a similar fading and darkening that occurred at a band just north of the equator, known as the North Equatorial Belt. This belt grew whiter in 2011 to an extent not seen in more than a century. In March of this year, that northern band started to darken again.

The team obtained new data from NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility and the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea that matched up that activity with infrared observations. Those data showed a simultaneous thickening of the deeper cloud decks, but not necessarily the upper cloud deck, unlike the South Equatorial Belt, where both levels of clouds thickened and then cleared up. The infrared data also resolved brown, elongated features in the whitened area called "brown barges" as distinct features and revealed them to be regions clearer of clouds and probably characterized by downwelling, dry air.

The team was also looking out for a series of blue-gray features along the southern edge of the North Equatorial Belt. Those features appear to be the clearest and driest regions on the planet and show up as apparent hotspots in the infrared view, because they reveal the radiation emerging from a very deep layer of Jupiter's atmosphere. (NASA's Galileo spacecraft sent a probe into one of these hotspots in 1995.) Those hotspots disappeared from 2010 to 2011, but had reestablished themselves by June of this year, coincident with the whitening and re-darkening of the North Equatorial Belt.

While Jupiter's own atmosphere has been churning through change, a number of objects have hurtled into Jupiter's atmosphere, creating fireballs visible to amateur Jupiter watchers on Earth. Three of these objects - probably less than 45 feet (15 meters) in diameter - have been observed since 2010. The latest of these hit Jupiter on Sept. 10, 2012, although Orton and colleagues' infrared investigations of these events showed this one did not cause lasting changes in the atmosphere, unlike those in 1994 or 2009.

"It does appear that Jupiter is taking an unusual beating over the last few years, but we expect that this apparent increase has more to do with an increasing cadre of skilled amateur astronomers training their telescopes on Jupiter and helping scientists keep a closer eye on our biggest planet," Orton said. "It is precisely this coordination between the amateur-astronomy community that we want to foster."

The infrared image at the top of the page shows Jupiter at a wavelength of 2.3 microns, constructed in a computer from 5 individual images taken from Palomar Mountain on July 23rd and 24th, 1994, showing the scars left by the multiple impacts of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. The picture shows the planet as it would appear to an observer located above 45 S, 60 W.

The prominent impact sites E, H, Q, G, and L (from left to right) are visible at 44 S, surrounding the bright South Polar Hood. The smaller spot between the Q and G impact sites is due to the R impact, which was observed directly from Palomar. The Polar Hood and the impact sites both appear bright in this image because they are composed of particulate clouds that are high above an opaque layer of gaseous methane, which obscures the underlying cloud deck at this wavelength. The fainter feature at 20 S, near the western limb of the planet, is the famous Great Red Spot.

already assuming terra nullis, are we? or is this manifest destiny out of control? None of these place are ours, and hopefully never will be.

@Tosca - I would say jupiter belongs to the human race until proved otherwise. That goes for everything in our solar system as well. Human right of discovery.

This is a hint that the "2012 end of the world" prediction may be correct. I don't seriously think it is, but it certainly could be interpreted that way.

When reporting on the colossus of the Solar System, such eventful changes are beyond fascinating, and a little unsettling, with a (sensationalized?) heading which includes "Cataclysmic Changes". Jupiter is no light-weight world of Earth's Sun family. And, pardon the pun, any such (highly unusual?) changes may have impact, whether by gentle roll of ripple, or robust surge of wave. Time will tell.

A well-done computer animation of these dramatic changes would be most interesting!

Imagine the thrill--and fear--in taking an adventurous journey through one of those warm clear patches of (blue?) sky. The deep, mighty and steady rumble of raging fury far below (where lies a bottomless, foreboding abyss), and atmospheric shudders felt all around (punctuated with bone-rattling sounds of distant boomings?), could freeze the puny soul of a voyager floating through the clear ocean expanse, walled by stormy, howling gas. Would a faint, trembling cry be quickly heard, lost in the vastness below (as desperate call is made to the mother ship orbiting safely above): "Get me out of here!"

Jupiter belongs to the human race? Wow, talk about hubris on a cosmic scale. Even earth doesn't "belong to the human race."

I'd like to know how these changes are regarded as cataclysmic? Does the author know these are cataclysmic changes, or was the intent that the title was in itself a question. The article does not really say anything. The 2012 brigade can relax. These changes might have happened a multitude of times in the past. The difference as stated is that instrumentation is more advanced and the number of skilled astronomers observing has increased.

@Noochy that sounds like me 10 month old. I see it and so it's mine...Let's get real. We're so insignificant in the scheme of things.Eye opener for me is the video posted on this site of the 80,000 year voyage to Alpha Centuri which has absolutely nothing in between and not much more when you get there except more vast distances to the next solar system. Not sure what I expected really from this animation. Just thought there'd be "things" to see on the way but this makes you realise just how vast and how empty space is....

Could this series of events on Jupiter be a consequence of release from the heliosphere thereby exposing this planet to cosmic space and expansion?

Yet another sensationalist headline. What makes these things "cataclysmic"? We don't have historical data, just more sensitive imaging to see things as they are now.

just so you know: until proven that we are not alone, all the Universe is ours. Remember that 500 years ago America was too far for anyone to even know about.
