From the 'X Files': "ET Technology Could Exist That's Beyond Matter"

Stephen Hawking warned recently that contact with an advanced extraterrestrial civilization could have dire consequences for the human species. Arthur C Clarke once made the famous observation that any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic.

Following in their footsteps, world renowned experts from physicist Sir Martin Rees of Cambridge University to astrobiologist Paul Davis of Arizona State have asked if we were to encounter alien technology far superior to our own, would we even realize what it was. A technology a million or more years in advance of ours could appear miraculous.

In fact, Davies writes in his book, Eerie Silence, that advanced technology might not even be made of matter. That it might have no fixed size or shape; have no well-defined boundaries. Is dynamical on all scales of space and time. Or, conversely, does not appear to do anything at all that we can discern. Does not consist of discrete, separate things; but rather it is a system,or a subtle higher-level correlation of things.

Are matter and information, Davies asks, all there is? Five hundred years ago, he writes, " the very concept of a device manipulating information, or software, would have been incomprehensible. Might there be a still higher level, as yet outside all human experience, that organizes electrons? If so, this "third level"  would never be manifest through observations made at the informational level, still less at the matter level.

We should be open to the distinct possibility that advanced alien technology a billion years old may operate at the third, or perhaps even a fourth or fifth level -all of which are totally incomprehensible to the human mind at our current state of evolution in 2010.

I find this very limited thinking in terms of 'intellect'.

One should remember, those evil E.T's out there have had ample time/chances to destroy/capture/enslave our planter earth.
While we were hunters, many beings had been exploring space.

One logical conclusion exists - we have been ,are being protected and our forefathers are bearing
with us as they said they would.

I think this article is an attempt to make people
fear all ET's.
Only 2 or 3% would capture the world.( given chance)
98% of exploring lifeforms, are evolved as positive beings.

One glaring presumption we have is to keep looking for material objects whose scale is about ours. Then, on top of this presumption, is the perspective outlined in the article above. Have we, for instance, firm proof that our ‘universe’ has a boundary? Can we even grasp what such a concept means? and ET's would not need to capture us for any need they might have: this is plain self-obsessed, ego-stroking

Why would they need to capture us Fluxed when the benefit I think would be to graft their Genetics to our evolutionary design if you will. It would be a civilized form of capturing. Would and Ape evolve into a Man or Woman if it's DNA was not changed? The reason why that evolutionary pattern has not be recreated since then.

One could say would there really of been Humans if it was not for an Alien intervention.

If your Solar System was at risk of dying and your collective Race lived long enough to make it to such an event would their intellect alone go into survival mode. It starts off with simple curiosity to explore space, then pushed to the need of having to explore space because of resources, to be heightened by survival again because of the very laws of physics determining their end.

Sounds exactly like what we are doing if you think about it. Now up the scale about 10 fold from our current level of ability to change the lower atomic function to displace matter as in the Atomic bomb to the ability to use matter beyond just displacement of such.

We use probes now to gather information that require old techniques to learn new ones. If you have a planet that has H2O as a fundamental element wouldn't you use that element as your own looking glass if you will to observe the species that you grafted to overtime.

Observe to either harvest or to rescue if needed could be one reason. It wouldn't be until the grafted lifeform developed enough to where that development would not suffer when introduce to a higher form of intelligence would that outer intelligence feel that it is safe to reveal itself.

It could be said that not all of the APE species required full grafting only certain strains. It could've also been why some strains of Humans never were able to finish the convergence in early Human evolution if you will and died off because it's mutated form could never survive.

It could be as simple as 1+1=2. If the recipe doesn't look like it is going to bake right, throw it out and try again until it rises the way you want it.

Enjoy the thinking.

Wish they have very similar looks than humans and speak plain english. What a waste if they'd rather communicate with whales than us and, forbid the thought, have BMI over 25 %. We'd never wish to talk with them if that were the case, no matter how beneficial their thoughts could be to our race. Bring out the harpoons and kill them for scientific purposes?

When the first confirmed contact happens we should learn considerably more about (extra terrestial) civilizations. Not much sense in speculating with secondary arguments, IMHOP.
While waiting for that, we can continue doing what we can best: warming up the planet, poisoning the environment and making life harder for other species. THAT summarizes pretty well the concept of human intelligent behaviour, I imagine.

Politely Tsap

What if we are the first and or only intelligent life that has reached this technological level?

While we are pondering over the prospects of discovering new forms of alien life and wondering how we might communicate with them, we should remind ourselves that here on Planet Earth we are surrounded by millions of different life forms. Let's try to communicate with them first of all. When we have achieved that, we might be better equipped to deal with the wider issues.
While we are about it, we might like to consider how we treat these animals who share this planet with us.
Mankind has a history of damaging the local habitat wherever it commands new territory, destroying indigenous communities and killing off wildlife.
We are still a primitive tribe, constantly at war over issues concerning slavery, land and religion.

@Brandon, name me one other scientific experiment or process where the desired outcome only happens once in over (100 billion x 100 billion) tries and that is a conservative number of the amount of galaxies times the number of estimated stars (possible solar systems) per galaxy. Those numbers could be far off and much larger than that. If we happened, then its a statistical impossibility in a universe so vast with so many chances, that it only happened once. Its just basic math.

Well maybe some advanced et civilization created us (the body or the matter)not the soul and created this universe they might be between us and god and might have send us here to know something or to purify ourselves.the universe is to much deep there is a plenty of possiblities

your "statistics": Only 2 or 3% would capture the world.( given chance)
98% of exploring lifeforms, are evolved as positive beings.

So that's the oposite what's on Earth: only 2% of us evolved as positive ;)

This whole thing you call the Universe is alien tech silly humans. And yes, some of you consider its origin supernatural or "magic". Your sense of scale created by your limited perception and fleeting lifespan should make you consider your paradigms suspect from the beginning. If you had the potential to be immortal, how might your worldview change? For one, a thousand years to the nearest star would be a doddle. And billion year projects could become possible.

My band recently released this X-Files inspired song. It's called I WANT TO BELIEVE!

@Matthew - not saying are, but someone has to be "first".

Perhaps some advanced alien civilization to create the we (body or the matter) instead of the soul and the creation of the universe they may be our relationship with god, and may have send us here to understand or purify themselves. The universe is more deep have a lot of sponges
