Obama to NASA: "New Technology 'Breakthroughs' Needed"

"Let's start thinking about, what's the next horizon? What's the next frontier out there? In order to do that, we'll need some technological breakthroughs that we don't have yet." --U.S. President Obama

NASA needs new technology breakthroughs to revitalize its mission to explore the universe, President Barack Obama said Wednesday as the shuttle Atlantis was preparing for its final mission.

Asked during his first-ever Twitter town hall meeting about where America stands in terms of space exploration with the shuttle program about to end after 30 years, Obama said he was "proud" of the past but eager for a new leap forward.

"We are still a leader in space exploration, but, frankly, I have been pushing NASA to revamp its vision," Obama said.

"The shuttle did some extraordinary work in low-orbit experiments, the International Space Station, moving cargo. It was an extraordinary accomplishment. And we're very proud of the work that it did," he added.

"But now what we need is that next technological breakthrough."

Obama said that the United States should move beyond the space travel models it used in the 1960s for the Apollo program that first sent men to the moon.

"Rather than keep on doing the same thing, let's invest in basic research around new technologies that can get us places faster, allow human space flight to last longer," he said.

While private companies hustle to build a next generation spacecraft to tote astronauts to space again, the US space agency can spend time figuring out new ways to live longer in space and send explorers to Mars or an asteroid, he said. "Let's start stretching the boundaries so we're not doing the same things over and over again.

Commercial companies may be able to make space travel more affordable for everyday people, while government-funded scientists focus on other work.

"Let's allow the private sector to get in so that they can, for example, send these low earth orbit vehicles into space, and we may be able to achieve a point in time where those of you who are just dying to go into space, you know, you can buy a ticket," said Obama.

"And a private carrier can potentially take you up there while the government focuses on the big breakthroughs that require much larger investments and involve much greater risk."

The space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to make its final flight to the International Space Station this week, though stormy weather could delay the mission by a couple of days, NASA said.

Once the shuttle program ends, the world's astronauts will have to rely on Russia to carry them to the ISS and back until private enterprise comes up with a next-generation US space capsule for cargo and crew.

I believe an underground moon base is the next option utilizing subsistence material usage, plus a solar collector built around the sun, that would fill energy dense ultra-capacitors that would use a semi-solid battery arrays to store thermal, electro-magnetic, and solar energy. Gotta tap into the SOURCE.

Obama is completely right. Matching completely my visions.
There is nothing interesting arround the Earth nowday.
Deep space explorations shall be the prime target from now on.

After all - there is just a 2 decades untill Star Trek storyline :D

RELEASE THE TECHNOLOGY! If they were serious about new technology the government would go into the black projects and release that technology to the private sector. SOLVES THE ECONOMY TOO. The airforce has a space plane, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!

Welcome to the slave planet where you aren't allowed to eve know about the toys and technology the government has, let alone bennifet from it.

I do think the President is on the right track. The private sector is stepping up to fill the shuttle gap, Constellation is being adapted to new uses, and we need to start looking at Mars, the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and places beyond our solar system.

Let's get the government people working on the math for effective FTL -- artificial wormholes, Alcubierre drives, quantum-tunneling teleportation, or what have you.

I'd say leave it up to the Singularity AIs. They'll figure out this (and all our other problems, too).

Two questions come to my mind:
1. "We are still a leader in space exploration," Obama said. Once the shuttle program ends, the world's astronauts will have to rely on Russia to carry them to the ISS.
Who's the leader, anyway?
2. "I have been pushing NASA to revamp its vision," Obama said.
Because it's cheaper?

Obama has gutted NASA. He's so full of crap. We spend squillions in Iraq and Afghanistan every week, if NASA's budget got ONE DAY's worth of Iraq spending a month we'd have bases on f'ing Pluto already.

Obama has not gutted NASA, Congress has! Don't blame the figure head. Congress and the wealthiest industries control this country and they have one thing in mind...filling their pockets with money.

The golden era of the US Space Exploration Age was in the 60's and 70's and came to an end with Challenger and more precisely Reagan's speech on the Challenger disaster http://www.inspiredspeeches.com/politics/reagan-challenger . NASA must be reimagined and reinvented.

Forget about LEADERSHIP in SPACE! fOR economical reasons and finding a new planet, the efforts must be united! It's all for continuity of HUMANITY. We are all responsible for the future of human race.

He is talking warp drive. Come on scientists, where is warp drive?

They make cuts on NASA's budget, yet still pour millions into the military industrial complex and this guy is saying they'll start stretching boundaries? This is pure high grade columbian bullshit! 'Verbal vommit' is what this is. I don't know how gullible you have to be that you would fall for Obama's promises again after 2 and a half years of him posing in a suit and smiling for the cameras, in other words doing fuck all.

Thats a great picture, breaking the sound barrier
