News Flash: CERN Orders 'Blackout' of "The Cloud" Cosmic-Ray Project News
The head of the world's leading physics lab at CERN in Geneva has prohibited scientists from drawing conclusions from a major experiment. The CLOUD ("Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets") experiment studies the role that particles from deep space play in cloud formation. CLOUD uses CERN's proton synchrotron to study the phenomenon.
CERN Director General Rolf-Dieter Heuer told Welt Online that the scientists should refrain from drawing conclusions from the latest experiment.
"I have asked the colleagues to present the results clearly, but not to interpret them," Heuer told veteran science editor Nigel Calder. "That would go immediately into the highly political arena of the climate change debate. One has to make clear that cosmic radiation is only one of many parameters."
The unusual "gagging order" could have been issued because the results of CLOUD are really, really boring, speculates Calder. Another conclusion is that that the experiment invites a politically unacceptable hypothesis on climate.
The CLOUD experiment builds on earlier experiments by Danish physicist Henrik Svensmark, who demonstrated that cosmic rays provide a seed for clouds. Tiny changes in the earth's cloud cover could account for variations in temperature of several degrees. The amount of Ultra Fine Condensation Nuclei (UFCN) material depends on the quantity of the background drizzle of rays, which varies depending on the strength of the sun's magnetic field and the strength of the Earth's magnetic field.
Speaking at a private event attended by El Reg earlier this year, Svensmark, who is not participating in the CLOUD project, wouldn't comment. He said he thought it was one of four significant factors: man-made factors, volcanoes, a "regime shift" in the mid-'70s, and cosmic rays.
The quantity of cosmic rays therefore has an influence on climate, but this isn't factored into the IPCC's "consensus" science at all.
"CERN has joined a long line of lesser institutions obliged to remain politically correct about the man-made global warming hypothesis. It's OK to enter 'the highly political arena of the climate change debate' provided your results endorse man-made warming, but not if they support Svensmark's heresy that the Sun alters the climate by influencing the cosmic ray influx and cloud formation," observed Calder.

This is sad and downright pathetic. What kind of scientist are these if they hide results based on politics?

Very unfortunate article. Are we now demanding that the laws of physics conform to some fringe group's conspiracy theories regarding the truly existential problem that is climate change?

Joe, you didn't read the piece, the data is not being "hidden", it's being presented, but not commented on or interpreted by the scientists.

Banning interpretation by scientists because the news is "too hot to handle" means that journalists will end up doing the interpretation. What better way to strike up controversy? Not to say that a good science minded journalist couldn't draw valid conclusions from analyzing data, but the unspoken implication is that "we have a really hot finding here that will knock your socks off, but we are too chickenshit too talk about it for fear our funding will go away."

So when will the data be published and where? I'm suspecting this won't even get a notice in the news if it has the "wrong" facts about global warming.

stupid scientists

Finally, Daily Galaxy runs a story that doesn't come straight from the Global Warming propaganda machine; congratulations, but wipe the sleep from your eyes after years of dogmatic slumber. there's lots of damage to undo thanks to the CAGW thought tyranny and your enabling. We, the readers, will make sure you don't backslide. Too bad you don't follow up and see what they are hiding at Cern;Go see wattsupwiththat.com to get the real story. And finally, yes Virginia, they are hiding scientific fact up there, let's not have any doubts about that. This is an unprecedented muzzling of free scientists by a political cabal masquerading as scientists.

Heuer the head of Cern is like Hitler. his goal is to suppress the truth from society, and give orders to his behind general Calder, who can lie and tell us he speculates that it is a boring report. Special Relativity has been intrepreted to include dark matter, dark energy, black holes, and 4% visible matter. SR was made by Einstein so that mechanics would be consistent with Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. Special relativity uses electromagnetic theories but has BAD INTERPRETATIONS.

I am amazed that anyone still believes in manmade global warming--but to think CERN
might do so? It's not clear if this is the case. As stated, journalists could have jumped
to this conclusion.
The sun is affecting us strongly at this time and magma seems to be rising. We are in
an unstable and even dangerous period.

See, a single article, and the imbeciles are all riled up. Too bad, I used to like this website, but I couldn't believe my eyes when i read this article. You should be ashamed for running this piece, when you know full well it contradicts all available studies.
As for the guy who said "stupid scientists," let me see how your life will turn out without any of commodities these stupid scientists brought to you? Imbeciles!

Why doesn't this result actually confirm global warming, given that cloud cover promotes cooling overall by increasing albedo and hence reflecting solar input? We need way more info here: how fast does the flux of cosmic radiation vary? How long do the effects on cloud formation last? What happens to UFCN in precipitation? Are these "cosmic UFCN" as effective as biological nuclei in forming droplets? How exactly does the sun impact the flux of cosmic radiation (what are the trends over time)?
Hold your fire until you have the facts. That's science.

So, physicists are being ordered NOT to 'interpret results' by CERN Director General Rolf-Dieter Heuer. If so, they are not doing science. If this is a serious order, this dude has to be fired. Immediately.

Tempers, Gentlemen, Tempers. How many times has the experiment been run? Are variations in the output statistically significant? Has the data, process and output been properly verified?
As the article states: CERN Director General Rolf-Dieter Heuer told Welt Online that the scientists should refrain from drawing conclusions from the latest experiment. I have asked the colleagues to present the results clearly, but not to interpret them," Heuer told veteran science editor Nigel Calder. This does not sound like a Archimedeian moment of self evident truth but a cautious, measured approach to an extremely complex problem where there are more variables than we can imagine – as pointed out. The populace should certainly run through the streets of Syracuse naked at this point.

Excuse me - that should have been ....NOT run through the streets of Syracuse....
Sorry

Cosmic Rays are the most important single factor responsible for cloud formation, rain, and global climate. There is a huge plasma layer in the ionosphere and upper atmosphere, where electric currents move from the equator to the poles and back again. The magnetic field of earth deflects most cosmic rays, but some rays seed clouds by forming condensation nuclei. Electromagnetic forces of condensation nuclei dispel their charges, and atmospheric electric currents flow around the earth like the Gulf stream flows around the world. The political concealment of correct interpretation will give the big-bang theory believers who get 100% of cosmology fundings and grants, their opportunity to distort the truth, that the Universe is electromagnetic in nature, and the cosmic rays interacting with the magnetosphere and our ionosphere, is causing spin, rotation, orbital angular momentum, and not newton's gravity.

Neither the article nor the scientists discussed denied that human activity is a (not 'the' but 'a') cause of climate change, nor the SCIENTIFIC evidence that the rapidity of climate change in our time is unprecedented, and therefore of concern.
What the article does say is that scientists are being asked to pretend that they have not made sense of the data when clearly, they have. This is not only a cowardly retreat by CERN from the supposed objectivity of science; it is also a clear demonstration that science is not as objective as we like to believe.
Do we really think that this is the only incidence of science muffling voices that go against the current political agenda? Or against economic interests, for that matter? All manner of valuable discoveries have been suppressed IN OUR LIFETIMES because they threatened vested interests - political and economic.
Many of those discoveries would have revolutionized health care, but made it much less profitable, especially to hospitals and drug companies. Others would have cleared up pollution in decades, even less, but were shelved in secret because they threatened the automotive business and would have required government spending for peaceful rather than military purposes.
THIS is the shame our society must bear - the shame of secrecy, of withholding information so that politicians, governments and big business can continue to dominate global affairs, regardless of how much harm they cause to humanity. CERN's action is just one tiny drop in an ocean of deceptions, and at least they are truthful enough to admit that their gag order is politically motivated.

Your dream is coming true with the resulting US credit crisis. With congress allowing president Obama to set up a super congress it basically allows him to do anything he wants by dictate.

To "oldfart"
I don't understand why they should not run naked through the streets of Syracuse. Do you have scientific proof that they should not run naked? Or, are you making a non-scientific, subjective statement? Or is it merely a personal feeling that the people of Syracuse are too fat and ugly to be running naked? It goes without saying, we do not want men running naked, but surely there are some young ladies in Syracuse who could run naked without offending either side of the global warming debate.

Perhaps they should have applied the same sort of blackout on global warming until they understood it completely or at least seen if the observation followed some of their predictions. After all, 150 years of temperature readings represent .0000000003 of 1% of the total time of the temperatures on earth. Really, 150 years hardly establishes a climate.
