Supernovas Discovered to be the 'Creation-Machines' of the Cosmos

New observations from the infrared Herschel Space Observatory reveal that an exploding star expelled the equivalent of between 160,000 and 230,000 Earth masses of fresh dust. This enormous quantity suggests that exploding stars, called supernovae, are the answer to the long-standing puzzle of what supplied our early universe with dust.

"This discovery illustrates the power of tackling a problem in astronomy with different wavelengths of light," said Paul Goldsmith, the NASA Herschel project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., who is not a part of the current study. "Herschel's eye for longer-wavelength infrared light has given us new tools for addressing a profound cosmic mystery."

Cosmic dust is made of various elements, such as carbon, oxygen, iron and other atoms heavier than hydrogen and helium. It is the stuff of which planets and people are made, and it is essential for star formation. Stars like our sun churn out flecks of dust as they age, spawning new generations of stars and their orbiting planets.

Astronomers have for decades wondered how dust was made in our early universe. Back then, sun-like stars had not been around long enough to produce the enormous amounts of dust observed in distant, early galaxies. Supernovae, on the other hand, are the explosions of massive stars that do not live long.

The new Herschel observations are the best evidence yet that supernovae are, in fact, the dust-making machines of the early cosmos.

Sn1987a_xray The study focused on the remains of the most recent supernova to be witnessed with the naked eye from Earth. Called SN 1987A, this remnant is the result of a stellar blast that occurred 170,000 light-years away and was seen on Earth in 1987. As the star blew up, it brightened in the night sky and then slowly faded over the following months. Because astronomers are able to witness the phases of this star's death over time, SN 1987A is one of the most extensively studied objects in the sky.

Recent optical observations of SN 1987A with the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed gradually brightening hot spots from a ring of matter that was ejected by the star thousands of years before it exploded. Chandra's X-ray image shows the cause for this brightening ring. A shock wave, traveling at a speed of 4,500 kilometers per second (10 million miles per hour), is smashing into portions of the optical ring. The gas in the expanding shell has a temperature of about 10 million degrees Celsius, and is visible only with an X-ray telescope.

SN 1987A is in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby galaxy that is 160,000 light years from Earth. Although SN 1987A was a spectacularly violent event, we are watching it from a very safe distance. For a supernova to do real damage to us, it would have to occur at a distance of less than about a hundred light years, more than a thousand times closer than SN1987A.

Initially, astronomers weren't sure if the Herschel telescope could even see this supernova remnant. Herschel detects the longest infrared wavelengths, which means it can see very cold objects that emit very little heat, such as dust. But it so happened that SN 1987A was imaged during a Herschel survey of the object's host galaxy -- a small neighboring galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud (it's called large because it's bigger than its sister galaxy, the Small Magellanic Cloud).

After the scientists retrieved the images from space, they were surprised to see that SN 1987A was aglow with light. Careful calculations revealed that the glow was coming from enormous clouds of dust -- consisting of 10,000 times more material than previous estimates. The dust is minus 429 to minus 416 degrees Fahrenheit (about minus 221 to 213 Celsius) -- colder than Pluto, which is about minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 degrees Celsius).

"Our Herschel discovery of dust in SN 1987A can make a significant understanding in the dust in the Large Magellanic Cloud," said Mikako Matsuura of University College London, England, the lead author of the Science paper. "In addition to the puzzle of how dust is made in the early universe, these results give us new clues to mysteries about how the Large Magellanic Cloud and even our own Milky Way became so dusty."

Previous studies had turned up some evidence that supernovae are capable of producing dust. For example, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, which detects shorter infrared wavelengths than Herschel, found 10,000 Earth-masses worth of fresh dust around the supernova remnant called Cassiopea A. Hershel can see even colder material, and thus the coldest reservoirs of dust. "The discovery of up to 230,000 Earths worth of dust around SN 1987A is the best evidence yet that these monstrous blasts are indeed mighty dust makers," said Eli Dwek, a co-author at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

There's an unending question I have regarding our galaxy. There are wonders that can't be answered.

It has long been my belief that we live inside the body of our creator God. Though I usually refer to the creator as him, in fact the body shows male and female organisms. Earth like planets are the seed accepting female, with stars/suns being the seeding male.

Is it a full moon out there? Why are all the crackpots coming out?

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me dude. wow.

I thought this kind of stuff was obvious. Where else can all the elements found on Earth be created? Only in a element-factory can this stuff be even theoretically possible. As Sagan said, "we are star-stuff, harvesting star light."

It is actually much interesting the dispersion of the shockwave, which actually shows that the blast isnt a regulary sphere as many peoples would thinks as blast occurred in vacuum space, neither the distribution of the elements, nor their quantity is same around the blast shape.

I think this points directly to the center of the gravity atractors. Which means that these kind of spectrograms of supernovae explosions could be used to measure the closest gravitational attractors, which could reveal some hidden objects. :)

Saints be praised...again the rug is pulled out from under organized religion...
no god...just star dust...our interdependent relation to the galaxy and universe.
god was a creation of people when they didn't know anything so they created an external entity to satisfy their ignorance of the chemistry, biology, geology, psychology, medical, environmental facts of our planet and the universe around us...
time for a new religion;

living in outside usa, watching news, watching movies, reading up the internets, growing up in a new unrecognized world from the old non-internet world, this culture, that i seem to recognize that will follow hollow claims as being truth; didn't scientists claim triceratops were fakes? shouldn't science trolls claims their truth over that claim, because science said they were not real? or must Mr Hawking say that they are fake?

Religious ignorants and scientific trolls have much in common, they both follow such claims out of ignorance and stupidity, both groups are no diplomat material, only two types to disagree over something that does not matter; which do you prefer "Coke or Pepsi", Red or blue? the little things that make an individual does not have to be belittled because one is wired differently than the other, which one was right: Einstein or Newton? were they both right? since science troll are so adamant in proving "Religion" wrong, i want to see if Einstein and Newton were both on the same page on different aspects of life.

Superior pride = superior downfall? greater humility = greater honor?

my IQ has averaged around 120-130, science trolls seem to gauge around 90-100, i wish they were intellectually smarter, and it will remain a proof that "tv makes one dumber, as well as the internet",
i'd urge anyone to represent science better than the previous "representatives".

You are asking questions of dead people. Since they can't answer you directly, you should turn to your Higher Power and ask them about it. If you aren't willing to turn to a Higher Power to answer your questions, well, then you are just s**t out of luck buddy, because all of your questions here are only going to get answered by the religious zealots or the science trolls that you've just cursed.
