Are We Living in a Holographic Universe? This May Be the Greatest Revolution of the 21st Century

What if our existence is a holographic projection of another, flat version of you living on a two-dimensional "surface" at the edge of this universe? In other words, are we real, or are we quantum interactions on the edges of the universe - and is that just as real anyway?

Whether we actually live in a hologram is being hotly debated,  but it is now becoming clear that looking at phenomena through a holographic lens could be key to solving some of the most perplexing problems in physics, including the physics that reigned before the big bang, what gives particles mass, a theory of quantum gravity.

In 1982 a litttle known but epic  event occured at the University of Paris, where a research team led by physicist Alain Aspect performed what may turn out to be one of the most important experiments of the 20th century. You did not hear about it on the Daily Show. In fact, unless you are a physicist you probably have never even heard Aspect's name, though increasing numbers of experts believe his discovery may change the face of science.

Aspect and his team discovered that under certain circumstances subatomic particles such as electrons are able to instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them. It doesn't matter whether they are 10 feet or 10 billion miles apart.

Somehow each particle always seems to know what the other is doing. The problem with this feat is that it violates Einstein's long-held tenet that no communication can travel faster than the speed of light. Since traveling faster than the speed of light is tantamount to breaking the time barrier, this daunting prospect has caused some physicists to try to come up with increasingly elaborate ways to explain away Aspect's findings.

University of London physicist David Bohm, for example, believes Aspect's findings imply that objective reality does not exist, that despite its apparent solidity the universe is at heart a phantasm, a gigantic and splendidly detailed hologram. Bohm was involved in the early development of the holonomic model of the functioning of the brain, a model for human cognition that is drastically different from conventionally accepted ideas. Bohm developed the theory that the brain operates in a manner similar to a hologram, in accordance with quantum mathematical principles and the characteristics of wave patterns.

To understand why Bohm makes this startling assertion, one must first understand that a hologram is a three- dimensional photograph made with the aid of a laser. To make a hologram, the object to be photographed is first bathed in the light of a laser beam. Then a second laser beam is bounced off the reflected light of the first and the resulting interference pattern (the area where the two laser beams conflate) is captured on film. When the film is developed, it looks like a meaningless swirl of light and dark lines. But as soon as the developed film is illuminated by another laser beam, a three-dimensional image of the original object appears.

In a recent collaboration between Fermilab scientists and hundreds of meters of laser may have found the very pixels of reality, grains of spacetime one tenth of a femtometer across.

The GEO600 system is armed with six hundred meters of laser tube, which sounds like enough to equip an entire Star War, but these lasers are for detection, not destruction. GEO600's length means it can measure changes of one part in six hundred million, accurate enough to detect even the tiniest ripples in space time -  assuming it isn't thrown off by somebody sneezing within a hundred meters or the wrong types of cloud overhead (seriously).  The problem with such an incredibly sensitive device is just that - it's incredibly sensitive.

The interferometer staff constantly battle against unwanted aberration, and were struggling against a particularly persistent signal when Fermilab Professor Craig Hogan suggested the problem wasn't with their equipment but with reality itself.  The quantum limit of reality, the Planck length, occurs at a far smaller length scale than their signal - but according to Hogan, this literal ultimate limit of tininess might be scaled up because we're all holograms. Obviously.

The idea is that all of our spatial dimensions can be represented by a 'surface' with one less dimension, just like a 3D hologram can be built out of information in 2D foils.  The foils in our case are the edges of the observable universe, where quantum fluctuations at the Planck scale are 'scaled up' into the ripples observed by the GEO600 team.  We'd like to remind you that although we're talking about "The GEO600 Laser Team probing the edge of reality", this is not a movie.

What does this mean for you?  In everyday action, nothing much - we're afraid that a fundamentally holographic nature doesn't allow you to travel around playing guitar and fighting crime (no matter what 80s cartoons may have taught you.)  Whether reality is as you see it, or you're the representation of interactions on a surface at the edge of the universe, getting run over by a truck (or a representation thereof) will still kill you.

In intellectual terms, though, this should raise so many fascinating questions you'll never need TV again.  While in the extreme earliest stages, with far more work to go before anyone can draw any conclusions, this is some of the most mind-bending metaphysical science you'll ever see.

This was actually an episode of Voyager back in 95.

Who created that fantastic illustration?

The concept of spatial degrees of freedom has not been extrapolated enough: analogous to 3D space-time being a projection of a flat realm, why not take this concept to the next leveel and hypothesize that from our perceived/real 3D realm there are higher dimensional projections all the way "up" to the 11 or so dimensions suggested via string theory. This is purely logical - our 3D realm could exist within a higher dimensional space-time of many more dimensions where conceivably one could, if one were a higher dimensional being, observe the 3D worlds undetected and "reach down or through" the dimensional membrane (edge of the 3D space-time universe that is not the surface of a 3D sphere or oblatoid body but a pervading co-existing oneness that is everywhere tangential to all 3D surfaces and separated by a Planck-scale distance) to the 3D realm like we humans play with ants on a table top. Like ants on a table top we could be surrounded by a higher dimensional realm(s) we can't see ...but we could probably detect indirectly if we were to look "upwards" to higher dimensions.

This theory was shown already in the comic Planetary as well... almost to the exact point. Kinda funny how it came to accept a fantastic theory that might be true.

The Universe is made up of two's already. Postive and negative, light and dark, good and bad, ying and yang, left and right, up and down, backward and forward, right and wrong, etc.

Why not dimensions? A holgraphic image makes far more sense than 11 dimensions......... and you know what Occam says!

Why do I have to keep telling you people stuff that seems so obvious?

ok, now we're all just a cartoon drawn on a piece of paper, what's next......

Holographic structures in the Universe have spin, rotation, and orbits. No fundamental difference between these exists. Charge is analogous to Mass in special relativity, and Maxwell's equations are the fundamental representation of reality rather then pseudo-gravity. See my holographic stories :

Its apparent solidity the universe is at heart a phantasm, a gigantic and splendidly detailed hologram.

Okay, first things first.Hogan hasn't called the GEO600 experiment proof that we live in a holographic reality. He did say much further experimentation has to be done to rule out mundane explanations for the signal observed by the GEO600 work.I was thinking that most of the extraneous noise in the experiment could be eliminated by performing it in space.

we exist as 3-dimensional beings with 3-dimensional consciousnesses (electric impulses traveling along neurons and axons) and everything else is an abstract conception whether it be 11 or 13 dimensional universes, holographic universes, flat universes, parallel universes, etc. ... only the 3-dimensional universe and its creatures are testable and touchable

The M87 galaxy, known as the cosmic searchlight beacon, shows how LASERS from inferred black hole jets could be focused on intergalactic dust and gas, to form galaxies and larger structures. No inscription by laser on a surface is necessary in outer space. Supermassive black holes have spin and rotation, along with angular momentum. Electromagnetic forces have been shown to power the jets, that are as vast as the length of the galaxy itself. Galaxies are close together, compared to their sizes. Many jets hit nearby galaxies. Most galaxies are with a few million light years of many other galaxies, and the IGM is filled with magnetic fields and currents from these jets. Where 3-dimensional intersecting jets and filaments converge, are at plasma knots where galaxy clusters and superclusters form great walls of galaxies. The plasma structure of the nucleus could very well produce hologram atoms.

Looking like we probably don't live in a holographic universe after all or do we?

""litttle known but epic event"

That confirms it, Daily Planet is written by a teenager (mind or body) who plays video games all day.

So what, if true?

Obviously it isn't written for serious cosmologists or any variety of professional astronomer, but for what it is, it is entertaining and (slightly) informative for those with a curiosity and about 1 minute a day to have it piqued.

I do wish the references were stronger with links to more (quantity, quality) serious material, but google usually suffices.

From the ancient wisdom :)
1) Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:12
New International Version (NIV)
"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."
2)"Plato's Cave" in Plato's "The Republic": Socrates describes a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Socrates, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall do not make up reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.

Well, Grammar Policeman, I'm sure DG will really miss you. Give my regards to Mister 'iggins. :)

Could this mean that a black hole, which is something from which no light escapes, provides the necessary conditions for creating a universe projected in to it from it's surface.
And that from within it would appear that this universe is expanding as the black hole sucks in more of our universe.
Just a thought...

Talbot's hologram and Hogan's hologram are both holograms that do not exist. Both of them required the existence of the planck scale. The holographic universe theory I always believed and wrote about, better fits reality if there is not a planck scale, where all the phony ultimate God particles come into play, like the Higgs. These findings can and should be interpreted to imply that the planck scale does not exist ! that quantum physics is very wrong with so many imaginary particles they give importance to. Electrons, atoms, nucleons, crystals, have all revealed far more information by holographic photographs. This suggests a higher understanding of light and electromagnetic reality exists with holograms. Black holes are really EM effects, which could produce 3-d structure holograms "of gravity as holographic projections", which would require phony dark matter to explain galactic shapes. The article should say that the holographic universe is supported, and the big-bang theory is not. Holographic phenomena are the growing future of science.

Two words.. THE MATRIX

The Singlarity is a plank unit that would imply previous existence of a material entity like a universe or even obviate the need and the logic of a big bang. The research into dark matter may be a process drastically altered according to the physics of holograms as indeed would be all larger and smaller observed phenomenal effects.

Perhaps time and the speed of light take on different physical characteristics interpreted as holograms. Perhaps that could mean that we could meet the stars in ships much sooner that we expected.

Your dream is coming true with the resulting US credit crisis. With congress allowing president Obama to set up a super congress it basically allows him to do anything he wants by dictate.

I don't know where you got the text about the Alain Aspect's experiment, but this is a verbatim copy of the text where i first got to know about David Bohm, many years ago. I don't remember in what web site it was, but there were not so many web sites these days. It is that at the time, i had made my Artificial Consciousness system, only a base to go further though, click on my nick to see my project. And i was astonished how similar my solution was to the David Bohm's implicate order. What David Bohm wrote about can indeed once give us the greatest power, and the greatest knowledge, this is perhaps even more important.
