Earth's Technology May be Too Primitive to Detect Advanced ET Life (Today's Most Popular)

Some of the world's leading astronomers -- including Great Britain's astronomer royal, Sir Martin Rees -- believe aliens, rather than using different radio waves or visible light to signal, may be using an entirely different communication medium such as ghostly neutrinos or with gravitational waves (ripples in the fabric of space-time) or using communication mechanisms we cannot begin to fathom.

“The fact that we have not yet found the slightest evidence for life -- much less intelligence -- beyond this Earth," said Arthur C. Clarke, "does not surprise or disappoint me in the least. Our technology must still be laughably primitive, we may be like jungle savages listening for the throbbing of tom-toms while the ether around them carries more words per second than they could utter in a lifetime."

Lord Rees, a leading cosmologist and astrophysicist who is the president of Britain’s Royal Society and astronomer to the Queen of England believes the existence of extraterrestrial life may be beyond human understanding.

“They could be staring us in the face and we just don’t recognize them. The problem is that we’re looking for something very much like us, assuming that they at least have something like the same mathematics and technology."

“I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can’t conceive. Just as a chimpanzee can’t understand quantum theory, it could be there as aspects of reality that are beyond the capacity of our brains.”

Frank Drake, the founder of SETI and Drake's Equation, believes that satellite TV and the “digital revolution” is making humanity invisible to aliens by cutting the transmission of TV and radio signals into space. The earth is currently surrounded by a 50 light year-wide “shell” of radiation from analogue TV, radio and radar transmissions. According to Drake, digital TV signals would look like white noise to a race of observing aliens.

Although the signals have spread far enough to reach many nearby star systems, they are rapidly vanishing in the wake of digital technology, said Drake. In the 1960s, Drake spearheaded the conversion of the Arecibo Observatory to a radio astronomy center. As a researcher, Drake was involved in the early work on pulsars. Drake also designed the Pioneer plaque with Carl Sagan in 1972, the first physical message sent into space. The plaque was designed to be understandable by extraterrestrials should they encounter it.

Milan Cirkovic of the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade, points out that the median age of terrestrial planets in the Milky Way is about 1.8 gigayears (one billion years) greater than the age of the Earth and the Solar System, which means that the median age of technological civilizations should be greater than the age of human civilization by the same amount. The vastness of this interval indicates that one or more processes must suppress observability of extraterrestrial communities.

Since at this point, there is no direct and/or widely apparent evidence that extraterrestrial life exists, it likely means one of the following:

We are (A) the first intelligent beings ever to become capable of making our presence known, and leaving our planet. At this point, there are no other life forms out there as advanced as us. Or perhaps extraterrestrial life does exists, but for some reason extraterrestrial life is so very rare and so very far away we’ll never make contact anyway -- making extraterrestrial life nonexistent in a practical sense at least.

Or is it (B) that many advanced civilizations have existed before us, but without exception, they have for some unknown reason, existed and/or expanded in such a way that they are completely undetectable by our instruments.

Or is it (C) There have been others, but they have all run into some sort of “cosmic roadblock” that eventually destroys them, or at least prevents their expansion beyond a small area.

Since Earth’s placement in space and time appears to be unremarkably random, proposition “A” seems fairly unlikely. Assuming humans evolved like other forms of life into our present state due to natural selection, then there's really nothing all that mystical, special or remarkable about our development as a species either. Due to the sheer numbers, there are almost certainly other planets capable of supporting at least some form of life. If that is so, then for Earthlings to be the very first species ever to make a noticeable mark on the Universe, from a statistical perspective, is incredibly unlikely.

For proposition “B” to be correct would defy all logic. If potentially thousands, or even millions of advanced extraterrestrial civilizations exist in the known Universe, then why would all of them, without exception, choose to expand or exist in such a way that they are completely undetectable? It’s conceivable that some might, or perhaps even the majority, but for all of them to be completely undetectable civilizations does not seem likely either.

Proposition C in some ways, appears to be more likely than A or B. If “survival of the fittest” follows similar pathways on other worlds, then our own “civilized” nature could be somewhat typical of extraterrestrial civilizations that have, or do, exist. Somehow, we all get to the point where we end up killing ourselves in a natural course of technological development and thereby self-inflict our own “cosmic roadblock”.

any civilization who is dumb enough to broadcast itself is quickly wiped out. there are over 2,000,000 intelligent civilizations in our galaxy alone. about 1% of them demonstrate sociopathic tendencies. this leaves 20,000 civilizations that will want to kill you if they find out you are there. my home was in quadrant 3 of the galaxy, and a dumbass, similar to carl sagan and frank drake, broadcast our location. my whole civilization was killed except for about 30 of us who were on a space mission and were away from our planet. we have wandered the galaxy for the past 4,000 years and 50 years ago we got your signals and have been watching you ever since. if you humans want any chance of surviving, you need expand into space because the broadcast doomed your planet. they will be here in less than 100 years. you might think this is a joke but i promise you it is not. please heed this warning.

Hey Ref check your math

"Earth's Technology May be Too Primitive to Detect Advanced ET Lifе" Why we can't detect alien signals or radio leakage (called also the Great Silence) is a secondary question, not the main one.
Pondering the Fermi paradox, the true question is why they don’t roam the Galaxy and why they haven't arrived on Earth, because for advanced civilizations, which are millions of years ahead of us, there wouldn't be any technological problem to travel across space.
The primitive ones, like ours, can't get into space - that's more than obvious.
The mega-civilizations are hiding - why? That's the ultimate question!

Quadrant 3 uses base pi instead of base 10 so the math is correct. We did killed of all but 30 of them, they just kept going in circles making it a very easy defeat.

And now that you've advertised, we know where you at at!

"This is the voice of the Mysterons!"

It is really very strange we seem to be so alone in this universe. It probably has something to do with the huge distances separating civilized worlds.

Your problem is scope. You folks keep talking about why we can't find intelligent life in our Galaxy; why not try looking in your entire Universe? You won't find many. The answer often does stare us in the face. Listen, the Multi-verse is a big place. You can't possibly imagine how big it is -- trust me, it's big. That's where all the hip and trendy intelligent civilizations go because this Universe is too dangerous. You clowns keep adding Observer after Observer. We slip off into some more comfortable and probably longer living universe with fewer Observers in it messing about with the quantum structure of reality. Really people, eventually you'll have to do the same so my advice is you better stop looking for neighbors to bore and get to it...

I have been saying the same thing as this article for years..... why does everyone ignore me?

One of the reasons to look in our local neighborhood first is because light/data coming from a distant galaxy is much older, a galaxy 50 million light years away would need a civilization at least 50 million years older than us (and may not be there anymore). Also, it would take 100 million years to establish the just the first communication. Local stars the time could be measured in tens of years.

There is a 4th possibility that explains things better than all the rest:

That we are living in a computer simulation, and the universe we observe is just that: a simulation.

If true, and if there is a real "universe" beyond our "simulated" universe, then there could be multiple intelligent civilizations in the real universe, each of which run multiple constructs of simulated universes within their computers.

Thus, the odds that an intelligence is living within a "simulated" universe is great than the odds of someone living in the "actual" universe.

(On an emotional level I do not actually believe we are a simulation, but on an intellectual level it seems to be a distinct, if not strong, possibility.)

Lol. I haven't been on here in a while, and I really missed the idiocy of these articles and the banter of the comments. Keep it up "Refuge Alien", you just made my day.

Rosetta Stone is proprietary language-learning software produced by Rosetta Stone;Ltd. Its title and its logo refer to the Rosetta Stone , an artifact inscribed in multiple languages that helped Jean-Fran?ois Champollion to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Is it really that hard to list as one of the possibilities, they exist and they are here? And the only mystery is why it is taking science so long to figure it out.

Its been a long time for the Daily Galaxy to post an article that takes a more evolved approach to ETs. Too much Hawkins and Dawkins noise going on and this SETI assumption that ETs use radio waves, always seemed way too homo-centric.

Although Drakes perspective is refreshing, he misses the point when asserts that aliens would see our 50 light year radio signal bubble as noise. The aliens don't need our radio waves to communicate with us. Perhaps they're waiting for us to access more evolved capacities so that they can communicate. Perhaps consciousness itself in non-local and that the ultimate scientific instrument for communicating with ETs are humans themselves.

At Imaginariums we are gathering groups of people together to dream. We dream in the same vicinity and invite others to dream from remote locations at the same time. We are discovering that the dreamers form a sort of antenna array - able to resolve much more about the nature of creation than we can individually.

I truly believe that it is in the evolution of our consciousness and not our external technology that will enable ET communication.

It is a nice write up on other life posiblities in ourvast universe. WE already know that Sun is just one ordinary star and there are enough possibilities of life forms existing in otherstar systems. Then, surely there are enough possibilities for more intelligent beings existing there. Yes, we should not consider our life forms as the only possible pattern of beings for the restof the Universe. Granting consciousness to be the mother of Creation, any form can be chosen by the consciousness to evolve into intelligent beings, not necessarily close in remblance to what we are! It is a pity that enough information has been reported scientifically to the general public about the findings about so-called Alians who happened to come incontact with us. What little we know about their vehicles used by them, it seems apparent thet our technology is far behind. There areno rockets attached to make them enter Earth or leave the Earth. Thus their technolgy does not appear to follow the scienc e that we have developed thus far. I for one believe that methodolgy of developing science should be wide open for research in other means of transport that are not yet known to us, e.g. expanding and contacting space in front and behind a space vehical to provide tremendous motion that may well be not restricted to limit of c, the velocity of light. Theory of relativity does not forbid velocities greater than c, but consider it just a barrier anamoly. Just as we have quantum tunnelling, there can exist barrier tunneling through such an anamolous barrier too , that we have not dared to consider or work out!

What I believe is most likely, is that we are simply using the wrong forms of communication. I'm sure the aliens are using communication methods that are way, way beyond the scope of our imagination.

Maybe they're all around, but we just really can't see them. Maybe the universe just isn't like that, anything short of a dream. But if you don't interact with it as though it is then it's going to seem like something that isn't.

interesting topic of discussion .... nice post :)

Good job with the post! I really like the whole content and matter that has been compiled so well.

aliens may not be as curious as we humans are at this time in history. They might have seen it all, heard it all. Therefore there isn't enough incentives to make contact with other civilizations. Maybe there are just bored and there is not a single reason for them to meet us.

Thank you for sharing this awesome piece of work!
