Giant Underground Chamber Found on Moon By India's Chandrayaan-1 Spacecraft

Moon The Indian Space Research Organization has discovered a "giant underground chamber" near the Moon's equator, in the Oceanus Procellarum area discovered by the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft—more than one mile long (1.7 kilometers) and 393 feet wide (120 meters)-big enough to contain a small lunar city.

The Indian researchers have published a paper detailing their findings and talking about the possibility of making this giant underground vault as a future human base. The settlement would be protected from radiation, micro-meteor impacts, dust and extreme temperature changes by the lava structure that provides a natural environmental control with a nearly constant temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit), unlike that of the lunar surface showing extreme variation, maximum of 130 degrees Celsius (266 degrees Fahrenheit) to a minimum of minus 180 degrees Celsius (-292 degrees Fahrenheit) in its diurnal (day-night) cycle.

In addition, lunar explorers would only need minimal construction, without the added cost of having to use expensive shields against the hazardous lunar environment.

Where do i sign in?

Geez, you had to go and say "big enough to contain a small lunar city". Do you have any idea where the nut cases are going to run with that comment.

Selenites, anyone? ;-]

This does conjure up that image, or the competing one of a base along the lines of "Space: 1999."

But old sci-fi aside, this does look like it would be the ideal location for a long-term moon base once we're ready to make one.

(PS: "The Daily Galaxu"? Oy! *Please* proofread more carefully!)

@Fred my first reaction as well :)

We can't inhabit a city that is already inhabited!!!! Why do you think that they were so interested in Mars' moon and discovered that it was also hollow. I think it's time for us to meet the neighbors.

I'm hoping that the brilliant ones that develop this site, and it will be if there is a chance to make money, recognize what they may be doing to the moon appearance. It has and still does play major roles in how we view ourselves and our environment. I would hate to have to look at a city's landfill or traffic congestion on a bright moon lit night. It might just 'kill the moment'.

These naturally occurring "chambers" on the moon (and probably also on Mars) are excellent locations to significantly reduce the complexity of creating a city on the moon!

They are believed to be old lava-tubes from long ago that are now hollow and were theorized to exist. So it's great they finally spotted a big one!

That is actually HUGE news for the potential of creating a city on the moon.

To create a city, you need to first put a dome on top of tube, to seal it from the outside vacuum of the lunar surface.

Secondly, you would then set up a series of mirrors and fiber optic light-collectors on the surface, to reflect and pump sunlight down into the tube. (Humans and plants need sunlight afterall!)

Thirdly, some nuclear powered generators to heat the place would be nice.

Fourth, you then fill it with air, and some water, and voila: instant underground city, where you can walk around without space suits.

In fact because the moon's gravity is so slow, you could actually attach wings to your arms and "flap" your way around the tube, and get around that way!

So this is really a huge find, as a potential site for a future human city on the moon.

This is very interesting but building a city on the moon... is a little much right now we need to take care of the problems we have on earth first before we venture out to start anew.

Thanks Velocity Wave for a comment with imagination and grounded science behind it. I agree. I am a cave explorer and help out with doing some science in caves. The potential of sealing off an old lava tube is very good. From there it would be much easier to have a colony. Even if that colony does nothing but lives there, it would mean that mankind has taken a huge leap towards long term survival. If some apocalyptic incident does happen to us, this colony might be what is left to repopulate the world. It would be a huge savings as a base toward interplanetary exploration since we would not be climbing the gravity well every time. This would allow us to hone the skills of survival in a cavern environment. Heat might come from just piping in the sun too. Many opportunities here. Oh and the wings. Mars also has caves. This might be the technique needed to make bases on other solar objects feasible. Now to go find more info than the article gave.

I am not seeing this underground chamber by the picture above, also, I am wondering how this underground chamber was seen from above the surface of the moon.

Sure, let's go to the moon, set up a base there, and f**k up another perfectly good body of the solar system.
Al scientists have proved is that scientific developments should never be entrusted to scientists, governments or the military,- which just about covers all of NASA's personnel.

to velocity.wave, sounds nice!wonder if anybody else has already taken advantage of that, there, here, probably all over.would love to flap over to the moon olympic stadium and see the races taking part!ussain bolt would probably win in any gravity

So...
Here we have a drip.
An IV Drip of data.

Why?
Cause *they* think WEEZALL can't handle the truth.

~sigh~

~shakes head in disgust~

Tick Tock, Tick Tock

This brings back images of landing on the moon in 2001 A Space Odyssey, where the ship was lowered into the ground!

This reminds me of Isaac Asimov's book "The Gods Themselves," in which the moon has a colony existing underground, protecting it from the harsh conditions of the surface.

This is a great find, with a lot of opportunity. Personally, I believe that the human race is going to have to eventually invest some serious time and effort into developing colonies on different celestial bodies. This could be the chance to start the wheel in something quite vital.

The way I see it,

1) We're going to use up the Earth's natural resources and/or over-pollute the Earth and reap the consequences of a diminished atmosphere.

2) We're going to blow each other up to a point where human extinction is very viable.

3) KA-BOOM! Heinous natural disaster. Or some kind of disaster upon Human kind.

So maybe not putting all our eggs in one basket, or in our case; planet, isn't such a bad idea?

It is my understanding that this is the location of a base that belongs to the U.S. and has been there since the mid 1960s. This information comes from a source who was involved with that project. You can believe this or not. Makes no difference to me. I happen to feel certain this is valid info but cannot prove it, obviously.

A big lava tube. Cool. May come in very handy indeed at some point.

"Sure, let's go to the moon, set up a base there, and f**k up another perfectly good body of the solar system."

There's no biosphere to f**k up. It's a rock (that contains some water ice, fortunately) bathed in killer radiation, sitting in a vacuum.

"It is my understanding that this is the location of a base that belongs to the U.S. and has been there since the mid 1960s."

Bullsh*t.

"We can't inhabit a city that is already inhabited!!!! Why do you think that they were so interested in Mars' moon and discovered that it was also hollow. I think it's time for us to meet the neighbors."

Remove your tinfoil hat and take your meds.

I will go...and make ice cream for the Mooninites!

On a more serious note...there's a high-res picture of the moon (500 mb)on teh inner net sumwhere...with labels of places n' such. I wonder if we are lucky enough that this picture might show this hole-in-the wall. But I'm sure the Indians have already set up a Tandoori place there, so no point...

Hey Wally, There no such things as nut case because What you May not see in your everyday life doesn't mean people see them all the time, And I am talking about Ufo and Aliens, They are real, Because you look at the fact We are not the only Living thing in this Big Universe, In fact they Keep it a secret about life Been visiting earth for a long time, So they could manipulate easy people to be fooled by thinking that there's life out there and They are watching/ helping us. You will see when the time comes. =)

I heard it is full of Cobras.

Documentary on a variety of topics, including, Antimatter Spacecraft Propulsion, Asteroid Mining, Cannabis Hemp, Energy, Organic Gardening, Solar, Sustainability, UFO’s. To say the world in which we live is on the wrong track, is an understatement of the highest order. Are there really limited solutions that require sacrifice, to solve the economic crisis, which is related to energy, or are the solutions in plain sight?

“Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere.” – George Washington

Current fuels/ethanols, oils, plastics, and most products are toxic to the environment and human health. Hemp products are non-toxic and healthy for the planet. When food, fuels, plastics, fibre, medicine are grown locally energy consumption dramatically reduces.

In 2003, Rick Simpson invented his Cancer Cure Hemp Oil.
In 2007, the World Health Organization reported worldwide Cancer caused 21,643 deaths per day (7.9 Million per year).
In 2010, The U.S. National Cancer Institute contained 2,100 staff members & a budget of $5.1 Billion dollars, so why haven’t they tested Rick’s Oil (Cannabis extract full of Cannabinoids including THC)?

Addition to my Peak Oil, Economic Collapse are a Fraud documentary.

Theres SOMEONE ALREADY ON THE MOON AND IT IS NOT US. Whoever is on the moon, are in Antarctica, in plain sign on google earth for whoever has the curiousity to look. There are many structures in Antarctica that do not look human. Why is the military the only ones allowed in Antarctica?

ANTIMATTER SPACECRAFT PROPULSION
Thunderstorms produce positrons that NASA's FERMI satellite detected. Just because science fiction speaks of antimatter doesn't make it not real. in fact it is real.

Myles:

First, you probably suffer from some sort of schizoaffective disorder. Your brain over-identifies agency, and you stitch together causal relationships between things where in fact no such relationships exist. You need help.

Yep, we could no doubt make better use of hemp fiber and oils (there's no hemp-based cure for cancer). And? Yes, antimatter is a real thing. So what? Do you know what it takes in energy and money to collect and store large amounts of it?

"Theres SOMEONE ALREADY ON THE MOON AND IT IS NOT US. Whoever is on the moon, are in Antarctica, in plain sign on google earth for whoever has the curiousity to look. There are many structures in Antarctica that do not look human. Why is the military the only ones allowed in Antarctica?"

There's no evidence of any non-human, technological intelligence on the moon. You think there is, because you're mentally ill. Same is the case for Antarctica -- and it's simply not true that only military personnel are allowed in Antarctica.

And most of your rant has nothing to do with the topic of the article -- typical of mentally ill people.

A regimen of cognitive behavioral therapy and light medication might work wonders for you (and no, it won't include hemp seed oil).

Giant underground chamber found on moon. Great... let's keep an open mind to all that this could entail and the possibilities it harbors for the human race.

Christopher Carr, you're full of arrogance and judge-mentally ill
