Discovery's Final Flight to Deliver Humanoid, "Robonaut"
NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida is in final count down to the final launch of the space shuttle Discovery this Thursday. The 11-day mission will deliver Robonaut, a humanoid robot, to the International Space Station, along with a new storage module.
Discovery was originally set to lift off in November, but fuel tank cracks postponed the mission. NASA has installed fixes and will be closely monitoring the tank for new problems in the run-up to lift-off.
This will be the 39th launch for Discovery, which has ventured into space more than any other shuttle. Discovery's retirement marks the beginning of the shuttle programme's final year.

I still don't know if we're retiring our STS fleet too early or too late, other craft from other nations will take up the slack while we're designing a new space craft / delivery system, but America should still have a definite presence in solar system exploration.

I don't mean to criticize the article, but what will this robot be doing up there? What's it's job? Spacewalks? Entertaining the crew?
Personally I hope it shows the crew how to play that cool knife game where you quickly stab the knife in between someone's spread out fingers. Oh and they should name the robot Bishop.

Jeremy -
It's a service robot, programmed to do repairs outside the ISS.
Speaking of working outside the ISS, I'm assuming it's hardened against radiation, but what if Robonaut gets stuck outside during a meteor shower / debris cloud ?

Great to see all our advancements in space have resulted in this. Especially when other countries are pushing their space programs even further while we get rid of ours.
