ET Tech: "Could Technology Exist That's Beyond Information & Matter?" (A Galaxy Classic)

4164320482_80f574d1c9Stephen Hawking warned recently that contact with an advanced extraterrestrial civilization could have dire consequences for the human species. Arthur C Clarke once made the famous observation that any sufficiently advanced technology would be indistinguishable from magic. Following in their footsteps, world renowned experts from physicist Sir Martin Rees of Cambridge University to astrobiologist Paul Davis of Arizona State have asked if we were to encounter alien technology far superior to our own, would we even realize what it was. A technology a million or more years in advance of ours could appear miraculous.

In fact, Davies writes in his new book, Eeie Silence, that advanced technology might not even be made of matter. That it might have no fixed size or shape; have no well-defined boundaries. Is dynamical on all scales of space and time. Or, conversely, does not appear to do anything at all that we can discern. Does not consistr of discrete, seperate things; but rather it is a system,or a subtle higher-level corrrelation of things.

Are matter and information, Davies asks, all there is? Five hundred years ago, he writes, " the very concept of a device manipulating information, or software, would have been incomprehensible. Might there be a still higher level, as yet outside all human experience, that organizes electrons? If so, this "third level"  would never be manifest through observations made at the informational level, still less at the matter level.

We should be open to the distinct possibility that advanced alien technology a billion years old may operate at the third, or perhaps even a fourth or fifth level -all of which are totally incomprehensible to the human mind at our current state of evolution in 2010.

wow,so beautiful.

There have been reports of advanced beings visiting earth as far back as 3,000 years ago. Beings that could materialize into human form, but who existed in a realm of pure energy, literally a parallel universe they could transcend at will.

Their leader has the title 'God'....

Throughout history, there have been and currently exist humans whose thoughts/ideas weren´t and aren´t understood and/or accepted; being, by far, less weird than the scientific explanation regarding latest, highly specialized (?!)developments in the quantum magical philosophical area... Whatever.
An duly, the kind of generally incomprehensible information is being divulged by the media, depends on who is beheld by the eye of the beholder. Apart from the fact that highly educated and experienced persons declare their conviction about the reality of Noah´s Ark (a technical impossibility); when the same individual is shown spectacular achievements effected by means of the use of a human brain, such as tissue regeneration, he denies same as something akin to a Chris Angel trick.

A million years? Even less.

Imagine a man walking into a cinema complex and delivering to the manager a couple of thin small shiny disks; imagine those disks being inserted in small boxy device with few moving parts, yet as if by magic generating 20 foot tall moving images and sound from a distant stage to delight an audience; imagine an audience so engaged that participants argue amongs themselves years later about the slightest details and overall meaning of their experience; imagine this extraordinary sequence of events is taken by granted by everyone involved, and in simply an ordinary commercial transaction made profitable by subsidiary marketing of popcorn and tee-shirts and plastic dolls.

How much of this could be explained to our forebears, to say a French king in the 14th century, or a Greek philosopher in the age of Pericles? The concept of marketing spectacles could be conveyed, I'm sure. Explaining the technolgy would be tougher job, but perhaps doable by waving our hands quickly and chanting "Blacksmithing, really advanced blacksmithing!"

I think what would be hardest to communicate is the vast peripheral area: movie fans, "camp" and cult and schlock, "auteurs" and ordinary directors, Oscars and Golden Globes, reviews on Siskel and Ebert, Woody Allen films invoking images of other films, ronin transforming to Western outlaw heroes and far future robots, stars and gossip columnists, publicists and marketing agreements, YouTube excerpts and blog comments, Rotten Tomatoes and film schools. How can we honor some actors (John Wayne) but not others (Lindsay Lohan)? How can some films be treated with contempt without inspiring bloody conflict in the streets between opposing factions? What raised the status of actors from social trash to aristocrats? What is the future of actors in an age of Photoshop and DIY movie making? Why do we care about these questions?

Simply recognizing alien techology is the easy part. Understanding what it all means will be the tough part.

Casey Kazan is thinking "out of the box" and we finally get an science article unmolested by technological pride.

Animals use technology without any comprehension of it. Dogs ride in automobiles, cats travel on airplanes, and they receive medical treatment for illnesses. I call that faith. Why can't people do the same.

michael behner chavez, "god" is a fake idea thought up by stupid people like you.

Has the time come for us to acknowledge the fact that we have as much in common with our fore fathers who created this great country, as they did with the common caveman?

we will slap them aliens a brazilian ways to sundae. bunch of stupids.

Hey Casey, how bout using a spell-checker?

Human imagination is truly fertile. Any thing is possible. Afetr all it is all in the mind. Consciousness is eternal. Being non-physical, it has given rise to everything visible in this universe and other possible universes. let us be open but fearless. I do not agree with Prof. Stephen Hawking prophecy that aliens will be dangerous. The probability is the same that they will be afraid of us as 'aliens'.
Technology is not something that humans have not created themselves. Yes, we have created Hydrogen bombs and piled them up to annihilate this Earth many times over. There is no greater worry than this matter itself! let us learn to take things in stride and also learn to live every moment as it comes fully and cheerfully. That is all we are required to do, nothing more or nothing less.

What Prof.Hawking sais is pure common sense.
You really do not have to be a scholar to realize how limited our knowledge and understanding about this Universe actually is.
Remember the times when people strongly believed that Earth is like a plate and the Sun is spinning around it?
Imagine a pretty much similar situation, only few centuries and some atomic bombs later ...
And if you are a bit into the science stuff, than you probably already heard of the string theory and the existence of apparently not 4 but 11 dimensions. What do you think the large Hadron Collider in Geneva was built up for?
:-)
