NASA: Is Approaching Space Object Artificial?

Comet_1342249c NASA authorities report that an unknown object approaching the Earth from deep space is almost certainly artificial in origin rather than being an asteroid. Object 2010 KQ was detected by the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona earlier this month, and subsequently tracked by NASA's asteroid-watching service, the Near-Earth Object Program headquartered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Observations by astronomer S J Bus, using the NASA-sponsored Infrared Telescope Facility in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, indicate that 2010 KQ's spectral characteristics do not match any of the known asteroid types, and the object's absolute magnitude (28.9) suggests it is only a few meters in size.

The mysterious artificial object has apparently made a close pass by the Earth, coming in almost to the distance of the Moon's orbit, and is now headed away again into the interplanetary void. The object has used no propulsion during the time NASA has had it under observation. However the spacewatch experts believe that it must have moved under its own power at some point, given its position and velocity.

"The orbit of this object is very similar to that of the Earth, and one would not expect a object to remain in this type of orbit for very long," said Paul Chodas, at JPL.

0528-NASA-space-junk_full_380  The experts believe that the object must be a spacecraft, or part of one - likely to be a booster stage from an interplanetary mission of the past, now drifting back in to Earth and out again. The next visit will probably be 2036, at which time there's a small chance that 2010 KQ will crash into the atmosphere and burn up.

The NASA graphic above shows the trajectory of the near-Earth object known as 2010 KQ, which the space agency said is likely a spent rocket stage that escaped the Earth-moon system years ago, and not an asteroid.

or is it? seriously though i was f**king excited reading this until i got to the "bold engine booster" part :(

oops meant old* engine booster^^

Clever word play for the title, though it will lead to many blue-balled nerds out there (myself included)

...quit teasing.

It is a Vulcan space craft

YAY they're coming! FINALLY!

ET is playing this weekend!

I gotta say i was reading it only for amusement value, since if there was even the slightest chance of there being an alien probe or something coming this way it would be all over the news. I was both relieved and disapointed at the end, because i've come to expect crazy, dillusional, idotic science from this site. Keep it up guys, you give me a good laugh every morning before i go to school! =P

...Dang it!...I forgot to pull the 'emergency parking brake'....again!

Alex, that's pretty dumb to say. Aliens are the most real thing in the universe. There's 500 BILLION galaxies and trust me we're not the only life. Certain not "crazy, dillusional, idotic science".

You keep going to school, keep yourself inside your little box. Do what society tells you to do and nothing more.

It's because of people like you this world cannot progress past level 0.

Thanks Alex,

Your Alien Brother

"likely to be a booster stage from an interplanetary mission", Booster stage coming from Deep Space, and not near earth...Hmmm
I'm buying stock in Tin afraid...

What was it that Hawking said recently an ET visit? It didn't turn out well for the locals when Columbus showed up. Maybe if we turn off the lights and keep quiet . . .

It is Jesus making his long awaited return visit to Earth. His Spacecraft is being flown by Pontius the Pilot.

"Alex, that's pretty dumb to say. Aliens are the most real thing in the universe. There's 500 BILLION galaxies and trust me we're not the only life. Certain not "crazy, dillusional, idotic science"."

Joe, this is even a dumber thing to say. Trust you? You obviously have some inside information. Where and when exactly are these aliens? I'm waiting...

Don't misunderstand me...I agree the chance that the earth is the only planet that harbors life is highly unlikely. But I am also not crazy or delusional enough to expect other people to trust me concerning something I cannot prove.

Luckily, people like Alex reserve judgement before the facts present themselves...which are almost always at the END of the articles at this site.

Joe, you may feel comfortable with sites like this having more in common with the National Enquirer than Science Daily...but some of us don't feel there is a place for sensationalism in the very least don't advertise yourself as science when this is obviously not your primary goal.

Von Nuemann probe anybody? Wont that be a blast!. As for "dumb statements" sometimes, its better to say nothing at all and appear stupid, than to open your mouth and remove any doubt.

Vger is coming back!

Excuse me but I have been watching space vehicle launches ever since the moon shot back in 1969 and have read countless books & magazines on the subject. At no time do I remember seeing "booster" stage rockets running much past the outer atmosphere and never out into deep space orbit. Go back and watch all the old videos. What happens every time a booster stage cuts out and separates from the main capsule? As soon as the booster rocket runs out of fuel shuts down and separates it starts dropping into a short lived arc back through the atmosphere where it burns up or drops into the ocean as preplanned by NASA. If they started leaving giant booster stage rockets tumbling around in Earths space working zone billions of dollars worth of satellites, space stations, Hubble and all would be in constant danger of random destruction by loose boosters. Hey, if I am wrong go ahead and school me. Thank you.

Adapting the well-known adage about aircraft pilots, there are old boosters and bold boosters, but no old bold boosters.

To Alex and Joe: Joe, I agree with you that it's extremely unlikely that we're the only intelligent life form in the universe (although I sometimes wonder about the "intelligent" part). But so far as I know, there's not yet a single piece of hard evidence for the existence of any actual ET life. The extremely high probability that there are apples in an apple orchard is not the same thing as demonstrating the existence of any one particular apple.

Alex, I agree with you that the article is poorly written. It started out sounding like the beginning of a real-life "Rendezvous with Rama" and devolved into an example of how we're littering the Solar neighborhood. I think the sensationalism wasn't intentional, only the result of clumsiness.

this is not an old booster...The idiots will believe what they see cuz I mean obviously these people are telling the truth right??

Yeah right, if the President can lie us into a genocidal war then Im sure as hell positive that NASA can lie to the idiotic people who think they know whats going on

"We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects and it would take an Act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity...Anything you can imagine, we already know how to do.We can take E.T. home "-Ben Rich, Head of Lockheed Skunk Works-HE MADE the B2 bomber....So I would rather believe this guy over some scientist/reporter who had no credibility to his name...

Ben Rich is a legend...OH this guy must be lying right?
Yeah right, its people like Alex and the skeptics who say there is no evidence when the evidence is abundant....
Lockheed is like Boeing, they are a revolutionary company...And why would this guy say this in his final speech??

So anyone saying there is no evidence is doing exactly what the Military Industrial Complex wants you to think. The evidence is abundant, over 4000 FAA confirmed cases, testimony from rocket scientists, PhDs, military officers, Private Corp Scientists/executives......

So shut up with this no evidence bs...The truth is hidden extremely well and its people like Alex, etc who read this article and think they are "informed" b/c this is an "alternative" "science" site...
Get a Clue, idiots

The NASA graphic above shows the trajectory of the near-Earth object. It shows that it is headed straight for earth, so why or what will cause it to veer around the earth, as shown in the graphic, instead of crashing into the earth????

There are no lifeless planets , and everything in space is alive.
All planets have at some time received visits either intelligent or other. Planets with no life on them are just bogus stories , myths designed to feed the lunatic fringe with no conspiracy theories.

@wow: the spaceship booster rocket has a slow enough trajectory it gets deflected by earth's gravity and radiates around.

Got me.

@Alex Are you kidding me? There is stuff out there that would blow our minds. We couldn't even dream up some of the stuff that is happening out in space. I love how this site uses their brains and tries to come up with new ideas. Becuase, it's far more complicated out in space then will EVER know. Why would aliens want us to know they exist to begin with. unless they want to take us over. How come they don't show us pictures of what it looks like? Why don't they tell us more about this? booster my ass!

i was so excited for a moment, dont do this to me ive just re read Rendezvous with Rama.litteraly read the last page last night.
