"The Kingdom" -A 4-Minute Video History of Saudi Arabia
With the fall of the Soviet Empire and the rise of the threat of Islamic in the sands on the Middle East , the world's leading oil producer, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, sometimes called "The Land of The Two Holy Mosques" in reference to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest places in Islam, has assumed a dramatic and strategic position in the emerging world picture.
The Kingdom was founded by Abdul-Aziz bin Saud, whose efforts began
in 1902 when he captured the Al-Saudâs ancestral home of Riyadh, and
culminated in 1932 with the proclamation, and recognition of the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
This intro to the film The Kingdom will take you on a four-minute tour de force from the discovery of oil in 1933 to today's "post-peak-oil" world.
Nobuo Tanaka, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) recently
said that "All countries must take vigorous, immediate and collective
action to curb runaway energy demand. The next ten years will be
crucial for all countries... We need to act now to bring about a
radical shift in investment in favor of cleaner, more efficient and
more secure energy technologies."
The International Energy
Agency has suggested that only a massive and immediate investment in
sustainable energy can prevent a global crisis. At the agency's annual
World Energy Outlook a major theme was the "alarming" growth in
worldwide energy needs. According to the IEA, this rampant growth may
be threatening energy security, accelerating global climate change and
will possibly bring worldwide shortages and conflicts within a single
generation.
