The Awesome Beauty of the Tarantula Nebula

30_doradus_1_2 The Tarantula Nebula (also known as 30 Doradus, or NGC 2070) is a huge star-formation complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is the most active starburst region in the entire Local Group of galaxies. Originally thought to be a star, Nicolas Louis de Lacaille recognized its nebular nature in 1751.

The closest supernova since the invention of the telescope, Supernova 1987A, occurred in the outskirts of the nebula.
