The Great Pyramid of… Germany -A New World Architectural Icon?

Jens_thiel_pyramid_2 The Giza Necropolis is home to the largest of the great pyramids of Egypt, inspirationally entitled the Great Pyramid, and eternal home to the body of the Fourth dynasty Pharaoh Khufu. Constructed over a period of 20 years, ending in what is believed to be around 2560BC, it is, thankfully, occasionally referred to as Khufu’s Pyramid.

However, it may soon lose its title as world’s largest pyramid if a group in Dessau, Germany has their way. Having recently received funding, as well as the services of famed architect Rem Koolhaas being hired as an adviser, the group intend to build the world’s largest pyramid, which will measure in at 578 meters tall, and be some 10 times larger than the original Great Pyramid.

The monument is being dubbed as a "monument for all of us", and is going to be built in the finest traditions of tomb making. Estimated to take some 30 years to finish, the “communal tomb” will be open to all nationalities and denominations, without prejudice.

Room will be made available for "tomb container with ashes of the deceased", as well as “memorial stones” with time capsules to store personal items for the deceased. According to the Co-Creator, Jens Thiel, "Our current estimates are that a burial space in a concrete block will cost up to €700 (£473, $960USD), depending on the size. Outlasting physical existence was reserved for the select few in Egypt, but this pyramid will be open to everyone. No one should be denied a place just because they can't afford it."

One note that caught my eye was the fact that, according to reports, Rem Koolhaas will be leading the jury to select the winning design for the pyramid.

Isn’t a pyramid rather uniform in design?

Nevertheless, for such a low price, there is no doubt in our minds at the Galaxy as to where we’ll be sending our ashes when we finally visit the big keyboard in the sky.
