Daily Galaxy Joins NetFlix, Craigslist & Others Hit by Massive Tues Power Outage
Craigslist, GameSpot, Yelp, Technorati, TypePad and Netflix – all big names across the internet and the Web 2.0 community – are all based within the San Francisco area. Unluckily for them, they were also all affected by a massive power outage that hit downtown SF Tuesday afternoon.
The reason their shutdown is linked to the power outage is thanks to their communal data center (at least for Craigslist and GameSpot) 365 Main. The data center company who pride themselves on maintaining a 24 hour, 7 day a week, 365 day a year continual uptime failed to deliver on their promise.
At 1:45pm, according to an email statement released by Miles Kelly, 365 Main's vice president of marketing, San Francisco suffered a “power event” that essentially caused thousands of locals and businesses without power. When asked why they failed to maintain uptime for their customers even through the power outage, Kelly simply said “I don’t know.”
According to a later statement power was restored at 2:34pm that afternoon. 365 Main have been running on backup generators ever since they brought everything back online, and won’t be switching to the utility mains until they are assured that the original problem has been fixed. However what was it that failed to work on 365’s end?
As with any such event, the reporting immediately following the event can sometimes be a little off-center. Reports of a drunken employee on a rampage and an angry mob outside 365’s headquarters were quickly debased and, in the case of the angry mob, explained away as employees trying to get in to the building, but having to line up outside to have their cards manually checked.
So even though we think our internet is infallible at times, it is interesting to see that our favorite websites can be brought down by a simple power outage.
