Will Wife of Jack the Ripper lead the Web TV Revolution?

Ipod20videoTelevision has long been the domain of… well, television. And, though that seems a poor way to start a quality article, it is the exact sentiment I want to work from. For you see, the standard ‘over the air’ television that has long been the cornerstone of many family dinners, is slowly coming to an end. And yes, cable-television is one aspect to that ending, but not the whole.

No one anymore wants to watch TV when the channels say they have too. We want to watch it whenever, and wherever. No longer do we want our lives guided by the TV guide. And thus we introduce Tivo in to the equation; the newest child in everyone’s home; or at least in those who can afford it. Now you can record countless shows, and watch them whenever your schedule allows. Add products like Slingbox to the equation, and not only are you watching it whenever, but wherever you want to watch it.

However as most pundits like myself will tell you, it’s not cable television that is going to be the future, but the internet. Already all the big name companies are moving in to streaming their top TV shows from their homepages. Amazon, iTunes and Joost are all getting in to the distribution of content made by others.

But the revolution starter in my opinion can be found over at sanctuaryforall.com. In their own words, “The First Broadcast Caliber Online Sci-Fi Series”. With Amanda Tapping of Stargate SG-1 fame heading up the cast, this science fiction series set in a world akin to The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is going to be one of the highest quality broadcast shows made solely for internet viewing.

The story revolves around Dr. Helen Magnus, aged 157 years old and the wife of Jack the Ripper. Her line of work follows on from her fathers, who set up a sanctuary for those of supernatural background. Starring alongside Tapping are Christopher Heyerdahl, Robin Dunne and Emilie Ullerup. The show premiered this past week on the 14th of May, and will continue to air new webisodes every fortnight or so.
