Thoughts of Dr. Geoffrey West, president of the Santa Fe Institute, devoted to creating a new kind of scientific research community, in pursuit of understanding the common themes that arise in natural, artificial, and social systems.

Dr. West is the author along with Luis Bettencourt of the Los Alamos National Laboratory of the theory that cities actually work like biological entities. Cities are where ideas are born and that is a far more powerful growth stimulant than economies of scale.
