The Encyclopedia of Life -

Eolmodbookandglobe2Do not miss checking out this video describing an epic new addition to the Web created by a group of the world's leading scientists to document the world's 1.8 million named species in a massive new "Encyclopedia of Life."

To date, humans have catalogued just 10 percent of the world's species. The encyclopedia will create a reservoir of knowledge akin to the Human Genome Project.

Harvard's famed biologist E.O. Wilson has dreamed of a webpage for every species in eixistence on our planet. The Encyclopedia of Life does just that: it will be scaled from novice to professional for manageable or in depth analysis of every creature - including marine life and plants.

The $12.5 million effort -- a collaboration of Chicago's Field Museum, Harvard University, the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass., the Smithsonian Institution, the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Missouri Botanical Garden -- aims to create separate Web pages on every known species within a decade.

The vast undertaking will be Wikipedia-like in its public access approach. If you have a favorite creature, submit your review and photos. It will be global museum of photos, links and video clips, all of it online.
