Steve Jobs Thinks Green Apples Taste Better
Apple responded to criticism from environmental groups, by unveiling plans to become a “Greener Apple”. Steve Jobs says Apple has always tried to stay ahead of the pack when it comes to environmentally friendly practices, but confirmed that Apple has failed to communicate that in the past.
Among the planned improvements are the following:
• Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008.
• Apple plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury by transitioning to LED backlighting for all displays when technically and economically feasible.
• Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of PVC and BFRs in its products by the end of 2008.
Steve Jobs did point out some of Apple’s current “green” practices including processing all of it’s e-waste stateside, rather than shipping it overseas for cheap, improper disposal (which often has a devastating effect on the world’s ecosystems.)
“We hold our recycling vendors to the highest environmental standards in the industry,” wrote Jobs, who also mentioned that Apple Inc will do a better job in the future of communicating their “green” efforts to the public.
