Starcraft 2 -The Worldwide Cult

Starcraft_2Saturday the 19th brought with it some of the best news I have received in a long time. For some time now fans of the video game company Blizzard, have been awaiting the big announcement that was  scheduled for Saturday. Theories about a World of Warcraft expansion, a Diablo III MMORPG and a sequel to the hit real time strategy game Starcraft were at the top of everyone’s mind; which one would it be?

Well, Saturday came, and as I was playing World of Warcraft I went to check the Blizzard website and found to my great delight that they had announced that Starcraft II was in development. And, it looks amazing!

The website went live immediately after the announcement was made at the 2007 Worldwide Invitational event in South Korea, and showcases screenshots, movies and race details.
For those not aware, Starcraft is a game where you control one of three galactic races, involved in a massive war against each other. Taking control of the Terrans, Zerg or Protoss your aim is to annihilate the opposing side taking as few losses as possible. The game has acquired possibly one of the most ‘cult-ish’ followings for a video game, going so far as to have televised matches and sponsorship deals in South Korea.

That this game is going to be top class is not up for debate; its release date is though.
Blizzard has never been a company to be dictated by pre-defined release dates, and will take as much time as they need to fully complete the game. Similar company policy surrounded the hit World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade, which was delayed indefinitely until they had finished developing. And while this occasionally has Blizzard fans a little unhappy, the majority are thankful that Blizzard have such high goals to reach, and are not fazed by delays and drops in their profit margin, just as long as they release a quality product.
