Incandescent Light Bulbs –Soon History?

Lightbulb_energy_2For some time now energy conservation groups have been biting away at world governments and organizations to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases. The latest push towards a cleaner environment is the proposed banning of incandescent light bulbs (image shows effect of replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents, which use four times less energy, and last eight times longer than incandescent light bulbs.

The U.S. Senate is apparently looking at a proposal that might hit the floor later this month, in which the incandescentbulbs will be phased out of use across a decade.

According to the US Department of Energy, 22% of energy goes towards lighting. 52% of the electricity generated is generated from coal plants, and the hope is that by switching to a more efficient light source, it will decrease the amount of coal production and new coal plants needed.

Approximately 95% of the energy emitted in a bulb is emitted through heat, and not light. No wonder that Canada, Europe, Australia, and governments around the world are bowing to the environmental groups. We can only hope that such statistical evidence can be brought to bear on other environmental issues.
